DEUTERONOMY 5:16
“Honor your father and your mother…”
Deuteronomy 5:16
It is said that Cubans conserve family traditions and
concepts, where the mother, the father, and the grandparents feel responsible
for the care and protection of the family, and feel called to self-sacrifice
and self-denial, even to the point of overprotecting their children. Nevertheless, we are frequently witnessing
the rise of cases where respect and consideration are replaced by selfishness,
violence, and neglect.
The
Bible contains a permanent call to the type of conduct which can lend dignity
to family relationships. We know that caring for a child requires patience,
total devotion, and love. And we also know that caring for an elderly person
requires these same attributes, enriched by the compassion that only Christ can
place in our hearts. God has promises for those who are able to honor, through
their conduct and their feelings, those who guided them through their journey
in life. It is only through the accomplishment
of these duties that we will be able to receive the peace of mind that will
allow us to live a good life on the earth that the Lord has given us.
Prayer: Lord, we pray for the elderly who
are shut away in hospitals and in old people’s homes, where they do not receive
the warmth of family members. We pray
for those who, though remaining in their homes, do not receive the type of care
that their physical and spiritual conditions require. Amen.

Deuteronomio 5:16
Se dice que los cubanos
conservamos concepciones familiares tradicionales, donde la madre, el padre y
los abuelos se sienten responsables del cuidado
y protección de la familia, y llamados al sacrificio abnegado y hasta a
la sobreprotección de los hijos. Sin embargo,
vemos surgir con frecuencia los casos
donde el respeto y la consideración van cediendo el paso al egoísmo, la
violencia, el descuido.
En la Biblia hay un llamado permanente a una conducta capaz de ennoblecer
las relaciones familiares. Sabemos que el cuidado de un niño requiere
paciencia, entrega total, amor. Y sabemos también que el cuidado de un anciano
necesita estos atributos, enriquecidos por la piedad que sólo Cristo puede
poner en nuestro corazón. Hay promesas de Dios para los que son capaces de
honrar con su conducta y sentimientos a aquellos que le guiaron en el camino de
su vida. Sólo el cumplimiento de estos deberes, será capaz de otorgarnos la
tranquilidad de conciencia, que nos permita vivir bien en la tierra que el
Señor nos ha dado.
Oración: Oramos Señor, por los ancianos recluidos en hospitales y asilos, donde no
reciben el calor de las relaciones familiares. Oramos por aquellos que
permaneciendo en sus hogares, no son objeto del cuidado que requieren sus
condiciones físicas y espirituales. Amén.
