WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23

THE GREATEST ONE

MARK 9:33-37

“Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.’”

Mark 9:35

When our children begin to attend school, we often say to them: “Study hard so you can be the best.”  Or when they participate in some competition, we encourage them to win in order to demonstrate their abilities. We do it, consciously or not, more than anything in order to inflate our own egos. We rarely think about the child and his abilities.  Oftentimes we hope for them to realize whatever we were not able to achieve in life. Wanting to be first, the most important, the only one, occasionally implies not looking around ourselves, not realizing that there is someone at our side who needs our presence, our time and our affection.  What matters is not that we be first, but that, in order to attain our goal, we do so with a spirit of solidarity. Let us not try to achieve our objectives at any cost, without contemplating the consequences that doing so could bring to those around us.

Prayer: Lord, help us to be aware that our lives should be an experience together with others, through the strength of your Spirit, Amen.

MARCOS 9:33-37

Cuando nuestros hijos comienzan en la escuela, muchas veces les decimos: “estudia para ser el mejor”, o cuando participan de alguna competencia los alentamos a ganar para que demuestren sus capacidades. Lo hacemos, a conciencia o no, más que nada para aumentar nuestro ego. Pocas veces pensamos en el niño y su capacidad. A menudo esperamos que realicen aquello que no pudimos lograr nosotros en la vida. Sin embargo, Jesús reprende a los discípulos y les explica que lo importante no es ser el primero. Querer ser el primero, el más importante, el único, implica en ocasiones, no mirar alrededor, no darse cuenta de que a nuestro lado alguien espera nuestra presencia, tiempo y afecto. No importa si no llegamos primero, pero sí es fundamental que, para llegar a nuestra meta, lo hagamos con sentimiento solidario. No intentemos lograr nuestros objetivos al precio que sea, sin contemplar qué consecuencias puede acarrear esto a los que nos rodean.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a tomar conciencia de que nuestra vida debe ser una experiencia con otros, por la fuerza de tu Espíritu. Amén.
