BEING MARTHA AND MARY

LUKE 10: 38-42

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”                                                             

1Peter 4: 10

Generally when we read this story in which Jesus visits Martha and Mary, we notice the opposing attitudes adopted by the two sisters in the face of this visit’s challenge.  For a long time I didn’t understand that Martha had come off poorly at the Teacher’s rebuke, when she complained that her sister was not helping her to attend to the guests.  Why set up the sisters’ actions against one another?  Each of them had her personality and her own gifts.  Martha must have been active and predisposed toward being a “doer,” whereas Mary, who perhaps had a more passive temperament, assigned herself the task of learning from the Teacher.  

A classmate from the seminary taught me a new way of looking at this well-known biblical passage. Why the need to choose between Martha and Mary? Wouldn’t it be better to be both Martha and Mary?  We can MAINTAIN OUR CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY and at the same time we can prepare ourselves to SERVE.

Prayer: Lord, help us to enrich our faith, teach us to praise you, but also guide us to prepare ourselves to be useful to others. Amen.

LUCAS 10: 38-42

“Que cada cual ponga al servicio de los demás

la gracia que ha recibido, como buenos

administradores de las diversas gracias de Dios.”                                                             

1Pedro 4: 10

Generalmente cuando leemos esta historia en la que Jesús visita a Marta y María, nos percatamos de que se contraponen las actitudes que adoptan las dos hermanas  ante el reto de esta visita.

Por mucho tiempo no entendía que Marta quedaba mal parada ante la respuesta del Maestro,  cuando ella se queja  de que su hermana no la ayuda a atender a los huéspedes. ¿por qué contraponer las acciones de las hermanas? Ambas tenían su personalidad y sus propios dones. Marta  debió ser activa  y se dispuso a “hacer”, María, quizás, de carácter más tranquilo se dio a la tarea de aprender del Maestro.

De una estudiante del seminario aprendí un nuevo enfoque  de este conocido texto. ¿Por qué  pensar en elegir entre Marta María? ¿No sería mejor pensar en que podemos ser Marta y María? Podemos CUIDAR NUESTRA ESPIRITUALIDAD CRISTIANA   y al mismo tiempo disponernos a SERVIR.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a  enriquecer nuestra fe, enséñanos a alabarte, pero guíanos también para disponernos a ser útiles a los demás. Amén.
