GOOD NEWS OR BAD NEWS
JOHN 4:5-42
“Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a
drink?’”
John 4:7
Jesus and a woman; and not just any woman;
she was a Samaritan woman. The Jews
believed that what God demanded was for them to live in accordance with the
law. As long as you obeyed these laws
you didn’t have any other problem with God. But in this story, Jesus approaches
a Samaritan woman who is drawing water from a well and asks her for water to
drink; not only is he speaking to a Samaritan woman, he is also willing to
drink from her cup.
Something strange is happening! So, is this a story of bad news or of good
news? Well, if you think that God has favorites, that he only allows “pure and
holy” people to approach him, this is bad news.
If you believe that some people are inferior to others, this is bad
news. If you believe that some people are worthy to be close to God and that
others are not, it is bad news. If you believe that some people can understand
who God is and that others cannot, it is bad news.
Jesus was willing to make himself impure in
the minds of the religious people of his time, because he understood that it is
not a question of whom or what you touch. It is not something outside of ourselves that
separates us from God. Jesus understood
that all persons are important to God and that God is important to all people.
Prayer: Thank you,
God, because we know that favoritism does not exist in you, that we are all
equal. Amen.

Jesús y
una mujer; y no una mujer cualquiera, era una mujer samaritana. Los judíos
creían que lo que Dios demandaba era que ellos vivieran en concordancia con las
leyes. Mientras cumplieras con estas leyes no tenías ningún otro problema con
Dios. Pero en esta historia, Jesús se le acerca a una mujer samaritana que está
sacando agua de un pozo y le pide agua para beber; no solo le está hablando a
una samaritana, está dispuesto a beber agua de su vaso. ¡Algo extraño está
sucediendo! ¿Así que esta es una historia de malas noticias o buenas noticas?
Bueno, si piensas que Dios tiene favoritos, que solo deja que las personas “
puras y santas” se acerquen; esto es malas noticias. Si tú crees que algunas
personas son inferiores a otras, estas son malas noticias. Si tú crees que
algunas personas son merecedoras de estar cerca de Dios y que otras no, estas
son malas noticias. Si tú crees que algunas personas pueden entender quién es
Dios y otros no, estas son malas noticias. Jesús está dispuesto a hacerse
impuro en las mentes de gente religiosa de su tiempo, porque él entiende que no
se trata de a quién o qué tocas. No es algo fuera de nosotros lo que nos separa
de Dios. Jesús entiende que a Dios le importan todas las personas y que a todas
las personas les importan Dios.
Oración: Gracias Padre, porque
sabemos que en ti no existen favoritismos, que todos somos iguales. Amén.
