IT IS I

 

JOHN  6:16-21

“But he said to them, ‘It is I; don’t be afraid.”

John 6:20

 

At  one time or another we have heard or read the story of Spartacus, a slave who was able to unite over a million slaves and who put the famous Roman legions in check.  At battles’ end his heights were decimated and made prisoners and concentrated on a plain. The Roman captain wanted to be certain that he had captured the leader of the insurrection and asked: “Who is Spartacus?”  To everyone’s surprise, hundreds of hands were raised and all together they shouted:  “It is I!”

 

When what you expect to receive is a special favor or a privilege, it is not difficult to listen to this quoted expression.  When the reply to the assertion can bring punishment or possibly death, the raised hands and voices are few.

 

Following Jesus’ “It is I” there was a declaration of hope: “I am the truth”; “I am the light of the world”; “I am the bread of life”; “I am the resurrection and the life.”  Jesus did not hesitate to say “It is I” before Pilate and with it he sealed his death sentence.  It is possible that under similar circumstances we might have to say: “It is I.”  Would we?

 

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to say “It is I” when we should.  Help us to live as responsible disciples.

 

 

YO SOY

Alguna que otra vez hemos leído o escuchado la historia de Espartaco, un esclavo que fue capaz de reunir a más de un millón de esclavos y puso en jaque a las famosas legiones romanas. Al final de la lucha sus alzados fueron diezmados y hechos prisioneros y concentrados en una llanura. El capitán romano quiso estar seguro de que había capturado al cabecilla de la insurrección e hizo la pregunta: ¿Quién es Espartaco?

Ante el asombro de todos cientos de manos se levantaron y gritaron a coro: “Yo soy”.

Cuando lo que se espera es una prebenda o privilegio, no es difícil escuchar la expresión citada. Cuando detrás de la aseveración puede venir el castigo y posiblemente la muerte, son pocas las manos y las aclamaciones.

Detrás de un “Yo Soy” de Jesús hubo una declaración de esperanza: “Yo soy la verdad”;  “Yo soy la luz del mundo”; “Yo soy el pan de vida”; “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida”. Jesús no vaciló en decir “Yo Soy” ante Pilato y con ello firmó su pena de muerte. Es posible que en situaciones parecidas o semejantes tengamos que decir “Yo Soy”. ¿Lo haríamos?

 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a decir “Yo Soy” cuando debemos hacerlo. Ayúdanos a vivir un discipulado responsable. Amén.
