THE LITTLE THINGS
2 KINGS 5:1-19
“Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of
Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel?”
2 Kings 5:12ª
Who would have imagined that the salvation of all humanity could come from
Israel? The scorn that Naaman the Sirian
showed from his colonial arrogance toward the “lesser” cultures illustrates
God’s pleasure in manifesting himself to all humanity, but always starting from
the lowliest. At the moment in history
in which Israel makes its entrance as a nation, there already existed great
civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, China… Nevertheless, in that narrow strip
of Palestine, God set his sight upon a people from whom his definitive
revelation would come: Jesus of
Nazareth.
How many times have we been victims of scorn due to specific economic,
esthetic, religious, sexual, or medical conditions? It is at such times that we need to remember
that God’s watchfulness over us does not abandon us due to being considered
lowly or unappreciated by others.
Moreover, we should be careful not to be the ones who spurn or scorn
others for one reason or another.
In these days of preparation for celebrating the arrival of Jesus, we
should pay special attention to all those small things in which God supposedly
could not dwell. Because that is nevertheless where God most deigns to reveals
himself.
Prayer: God of goodness and
mercy, enlighten us so that we do not forget the true meaning of your presence
among us. Amen.

pequeñas cosas

aguas de Israel?”

Quién
pudiera imaginar que de Israel pudiera salir la salvación para toda la
humanidad. El menosprecio a las “pequeñas” culturas que demuestra Naamán el
sirio desde su arrogancia colonial, da cuenta de que a Dios le ha placido
manifestarse a toda la humanidad, pero partiendo siempre de los más pequeños.
En el momento de la historia en que Israel hace su entrada como nación ya
existían grandes civilizaciones como Egipto, Grecia, China… Sin embargo, en
aquella estrecha franja de la palestina, Dios fijó su mirada en un pueblo del
cual saldría su revelación definitiva: Jesús de Nazaret.
Cuántas veces somos víctima del menosprecio por
determinadas condiciones económicas, estéticas, religiosas, sexuales, etarias,
de salud… Es en tales momentos en los que debemos recordar que la mirada de
Dios no nos abandona por ser más pequeños o menos apreciados por los demás.
Además, debemos cuidar para no ser nosotros los que despreciamos o
menospreciamos a otros y otras por tal o más cual condición.
En estos días en que nos preparamos para celebrar
la llegada de Jesús, deberíamos prestar una especial atención a todas aquellas
pequeñas cosas en las que supuestamente no podría habitar Dios. Sin embargo,
allí es donde Dios se revela más dignamente.
Oración:
Dios bueno y misericordioso, ilumínanos para que no olvidemos cuál es el
verdadero sentido de tu presencia entre nosotros. Amén.
