HOW CAN SUCH CRUELTY EXIST?
MatTHEW 2:16-18
“When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was
furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity
who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from
the Magi.”
Matthew 2:16
This is one of the most horrifying passages
surrounding the story of Jesus’ birth. We often overlook this part of the story
because it is too painful to derive any pleasure from it. Yet we should do
justice to the pain suffered by the families of those children, especially
their mothers, and we should be conscious that God also invites us to reflect
upon events such as this.
The assassination
of those infants was in obedience to the cruelty and the immeasurable fear of a
terrible king who saw that his continued power was in danger. This is a typical
example of how no matter how good a piece of news may be, it will always be met
by opponents who respond aggressively and who try oppose the message of
Salvation. The pain of these children
and their families represents the risk that is implied by the establishment of
a renewing reality in history. Whenever God has manifested himself in
abundance, powerful forces have emerged as obstacles, and yet, as in the
biblical story, nothing can detain what God proposes.
On this
very day, perhaps you could list numerous obstacles that interfere in your good
intentions to follow God. There will
always be a Herod crossing our paths, but there are also alternatives that God
opens in order to fulfill his promises, beyond human intentions.
Prayer: God of goodness, when cruelty and violence arise against us, make us bearers of your righteousness and your peace. Amen.
¿Cómo es posible tanta
crueldad?
Mateo 2:16-18
“Herodes entonces, cuando se vio burlado por los
sabios, se enojó mucho y mandó matar a todos los niños menores de dos años que
había en Belén y en todos sus
alrededores,
conforme al tiempo indicado por los sabios”
Mateo 2:16
Este es uno de los pasajes más estremecedores
alrededor de la historia del nacimiento de Jesús. Muchas veces obviamos esta
parte de la historia porque es demasiado dolorosa como para regodearse en ella.
Sin embargo, hagamos justicia al dolor sufrido por las familias de aquellos
niños, sobre todo a sus madres, y tengamos conciencia de que Dios también nos
invita a reflexionar acerca de sucesos como este.
El asesinato de aquellos niños obedeció a la crueldad y miedo desmedidos de
un terrible rey que vio en peligro su permanencia en el poder. Este es el
típico ejemplo de cómo una noticia por buena que sea siempre va a encontrar
oponentes que respondan agresivamente y traten de interponerse al mensaje de
Salvación. El dolor de estos niños y sus familias representa el riesgo que
implica la irrupción de una realidad renovadora en la historia. Siempre que
Dios pretende manifestarse en plenitud existen fuerzas que se erigen como
obstáculos, sin embargo, como en el relato bíblico, nada puede detener aquello
que Dios propone.
En este propio día, quizás Ud. pueda enumerar numerosos obstáculos que
interfieran en su buena voluntad de seguir a Dios. Siempre hay Herodes que se
atraviesan en nuestro camino, pero también hay alternativas que Dios abre para
hacer cumplir sus promesas, más allá de pretensiones humanas.
Oración: Dios bueno, cuando la crueldad y la violencia se levanten contra
nosotros, haznos portadores de tu justicia y tu paz. Amén.
