THANK YOU FOR THE WATER

JOHn 4:1-15

 “Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.’”

John 4:10

A short while ago, as our family sat down to eat, we asked our little daughter to give thanks for the food. To our great surprise, the little one thanked God for the water we were about to drink.  And it is true that we are often unaware of the blessing that it is to have water to drink, and we often only declare our gratitude for food.

Ever since this profound prayer was made by our daughter we remark among ourselves that giving thanks to God for our water is another way of confirming our commitment to his care over us.  Systems of water purification have been installed in many of our Presbyterian churches, benefitting thousands of people in our communities.  This is one specific way of giving thanks to God for our drinking water, by giving it to the people in good quality.  Now when we save each drop of this precious liquid, when we remember that it is not a renewable resource and that many people around the world need it and that is why we do not waste it… we are grateful to God with specific gestures.

Jesus is our living water and this is not an abstract concept.  Jesus is present in the inexhaustible thirst of each person in the world.

Present: God, you who are living water, allow us to grow in our commitment with the waters that you have created. Grant that during this Advent we may deepen our relationship with you, in order to also become living water for the world. Amen.

Gracias por el agua

Juan 4:1-15

“Si conocieras el don de Dios, y quién es el que te dice:

“dame de beber”, tú le pedirías, y él te daría agua viva”

Hace muy poco, reunida la familia a la mesa, le pedimos a nuestra pequeña hija que diera que gracias por los alimentos. Cuán grande fue nuestra sorpresa al escuchar a la pequeña agradecer a Dios por el agua que íbamos a beber. Y es cierto que muchas veces no nos percatamos de la bendición que resulta tener agua para beber, y declaramos nuestra gratitud sólo por la comida.

A partir de esta profunda oración de nuestra hija comentamos entre nosotros que dar gracias a Dios por el agua también debe confirmar nuestro compromiso con su cuidado. En muchas de nuestras Iglesias presbiterianas se han instalado sistemas de purificación de agua que han beneficiado a miles de personas en nuestras comunidades, esta es una manera concreta de agradecer a Dios por el agua, dándola al pueblo con calidad. Cuando ahorramos cada gota del preciado líquido, cuando recordamos que es un recurso no renovable y que muchas personas lo necesitan alrededor del mundo y por eso no lo derrochamos… estamos agradeciendo a Dios con gestos concretos.

Jesús es nuestra agua viva y esto no es un concepto abstracto. Jesús está presente en la sed inagotable de cada persona en el mundo.

Oración: Dios, tú que eres agua viva, permítenos crecer en compromiso con las aguas que tú has creado.  Permite que en este  adviento podamos profundizar en nuestra relación contigo, para convertirnos también en agua viva para el mundo. Amén
