Esther: defender of her people
Esther 2:16-18
“If it pleases the King,” she said, “and if he
regards me with favor, and thinks it the right thing to do, let an order be
written overruling the dispatches that Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite,
devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.”
Esther 8:5
The story of Queen Esther is the stuff of which
novels are made. Her entire childhood was a tragedy: an orphaned daughter of
both father and mother, raised by a cousin who adopted her as his own daughter.
The story of her youth turns romantic: a
young Jewish maiden who became the wife of the king of Persia. But as in all novels, the story is complicated
by the appearance of the depraved Haman. We could continue narrating the story
but will instead focus on the most important issue. It is undoubtedly not a story to read for
pleasure. It is a story that transmits a
special message to us: that in spite of
human perverseness, God has plans in favor of his people.
But when I
reread the story today I find another important teaching for the life of our
communities. We have a saying that
affirms that “in our glories our memories fail us.” This did not happen to Esther; in spite of
being a queen she placed her own life in danger in order to defend her
people. She did not forget the community
of which she was a part and which had raised her. I think we are being taught
that, regardless of our position in life, we should not forget the importance
of our community.
Prayer: Father, help me to be loyal to my community. Amen.

La historia de la reina
Ester, es una historia como para hacer una novela. Su infancia es toda una
tragedia: huérfana de padre y madre, fue criada por un primo, que la adoptó
como hija suya. La historia de su juventud se torna romántica: una jovencita
judía que llega a casarse con el rey de
Persia. Pero como en toda novela, la
historia se complica cuando surge el perverso Amán.
Pudiéramos seguir
narrando esta historia, pero qué es lo más importante de este relato. Sin duda
que no es una historia para pasar el rato. Es una historia que nos trasmite un
mensaje especial y es que a pesar de la perversidad humana, Dios tiene planes a
favor de su pueblo.
Pero hoy cuando releo la
historia encuentro otra enseñanza importante para la vida de nuestras
comunidades. Tenemos un refrán que afirma que “con las glorias se olvidan las
memorias”. Con Ester no se cumplió; ella a pesar de ser reina puso en peligro
su vida por defender a su pueblo. No se olvidó de la comunidad de la cual
formaba parte y que la había formado a ella. Creo que hay un llamado de
atención, para que cualquiera que fuera nuestra posición, no olvidemos la
importancia de la comunidad.

fiel a mi comunidad. Amén
