LET US REAFFIRM LIFE
EXODUS 1:12-2:10
“The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.”
Exodus 1:17
The story surrounding the birth of Moses is undoubtedly a story of resistance and struggle against injustice.

We must first point out the courage of the midwives.  I imagine that when they received the order to kill all the male newborns, they found themselves facing a strong contradiction. They may have thought: “If our mission is to give life to these babies, how are we going to kill them?” Instead of obeying the king, they listened to God and accomplished their mission.

At times we face those same temptations.  On the one hand God has shown us the right path, but our circumstances or the “kings” of this world tempt us to make erroneous decisions that run contrary to the abundant life that Jesus showed us. We should be courageous enough to fear God, to listen to him and to rise to the occasion, denying spiritual death and dignifying life.  God will assuredly facilitate things as He did with the mother of Moses. This woman who gave birth to the man who would guide the people through the desert on their pilgrimage of freedom, sought alternatives in order to save her son, and in the end God blessed her with the possibility of continuing to nurse him. As these women did, let us refuse to practice any form of death and injustice. Let us affirm life!

Prayer:  God of goodness, as this time of Lent draws to a close, we ask you to give us the discernment, wisdom and strength to confront the temptations of this world and to make decisions in accordance with your will.  May your righteousness flow, Lord!
