SHININESS OR LIGHT?
MATTHEW 6:1-8
Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen
by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

We live in
a world that gives a great deal of importance to appearances, to what is seen,
to the way things appear to be. A world
in which most of the time what something appears to be is not what it is. And
this is not an evil of our times alone.
Human beings have always been preoccupied with the opinions that others
may have over one’s manner of being, of acting, of thinking, of living. The sad
thing is that this preoccupation only concerns what others are able to perceive
about what we do, and not so much what we are really doing when nobody can see
us.
Unfortunately,
we Christians are not immune to this trap. We are often obsessed by our
appearance on Sundays in Church, wanting the other members of the congregation
to see how much we do for others and for the church itself. We don’t care as much about the quality of
our testimony as about its appearance. A Christian’s only interest, his only
goal, should be to honor Jesus with his attitude.
Serve in
silence, driven by the love placed within you by the Lord for others. Enjoy the
direct, intimate and effective dialogue which is prayer.
Prayer: Beloved Father, You who have put in us the
desire to serve, to give, to help others: take away our vain desire for recognition
and praise for doing only what you command us to do. Adorn our souls with
humility, discretion and virtue. May
your love be what moves us, Lord. Amen.

LUZ?
MATEO 6:1-8
Cuidado con hacer sus obras de justicia sólo
para que la gente los vea. Si lo hacen así, su
Padre
que está en los cielos no les dará ninguna
recompensa.

Vivimos en un mundo que
da mucha importancia a las apariencias, a lo que se ve, a lo que parece ser. Un
mundo en el que la mayor parte del tiempo eso que parece ser, no es. Y no es un
mal propio de nuestros días. El ser humano ha vivido siempre preocupado por la
opinión que puedan tener sus semejantes sobre su modo de ser, de actuar, de
pensar, de vivir. Lo triste es que la preocupación solo concierne a lo que los
demás puedan percibir de aquello que hacemos, no tanto a lo que realmente
hacemos allí donde nadie nos ve. Desgraciadamente, los cristianos no escapamos
de esta trampa. Suele obsesionarnos nuestra apariencia los domingos en la
iglesia, que los demás miembros de la congregación conozcan cuánto hacemos por
nuestro prójimo y por la iglesia misma. No nos preocupa tanto la calidad de
nuestro testimonio como la apariencia de este. Esta actitud es totalmente
contraria a la que Jesús demanda de sus discípulos. El único interés del
cristiano, su único empeño, debe ser honrar con su actitud a Jesús.
Sirve en silencio, impulsado por el amor al
prójimo que el Señor ha puesto en ti. Disfruta del diálogo directo, íntimo y
efectivo que es la oración.
Oración: Amado Padre, Tú que has puesto en nosotros el ansia de servir, de dar,
de hacer por nuestro prójimo; quítanos el vano deseo del reconocimiento y el
aplauso sólo por cumplir con lo que de nosotros demandas. Adornarnos el alma
con la humildad, la discreción, la virtud. Que sea tu amor el que nos mueva,
Señor. Amén.
