FIRST FROM WITHIN

MATTHEW 10:5-15

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.”

 Matthew 10:5-6

Reading these verses immediately reminded me of all the calls and exhortations that we often hear about evangelism in our churches or in other places. From the pulpit and the rostrums there is an emphasis on the need to go out into the world proclaiming the news of salvation to all those who are unaware of the gospel.

It is curious, however, how in this biblical passage where Jesus commissions his disciples, giving them authority and power to heal and to perform miracles in his name, he advises them to first go to the lost sheep of Israel, not after the sheep of the world.  It is as if he were saying to them: “There is still much to be done among the people of God. You first need to constitute a united and holy flock.”

How were they to change the world if they were not capable of changing themselves, of changing their churches?  Let us look within our churches first and we will see if we are really any different from that world that doesn’t know Jesus.

Prayer: God of love, at the start of this Easter, you call us to first wash our own hands, our houses, our souls, so that we can then share your word and its renewing testimony in our lives. Guide us, sustain us and remain beside us in this effort. We ask this in the name of the resurrected Jesus. Amen.

MATEO  10:5-15

A estos doce envió Jesús, y les dio instrucciones diciendo: Por camino de gentiles no vayáis, y en ciudad de samaritanos no entréis, sino id ante las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel.

Mateo 10:5-6

La lectura de estos versículos me recordó de inmediato todos los llamados y exhortaciones que a menudo escuchamos en nuestras iglesias u otros espacios acerca de la evangelización. Se enfatiza desde los púlpitos y las tribunas la necesidad de salir al mundo anunciando las nuevas de salvación a todas aquellas personas que desconocen el evangelio.

Es curioso, sin embargo, como en este pasaje bíblico donde Jesús comisiona a sus discípulos, dándoles autoridad y poder para sanar y hacer milagros en su nombre, les aconseja ir primero a por las ovejas descarriadas de Israel, no por las ovejas del mundo. Es como si les dijera: “Queda mucho por hacer aun entre el pueblo de Dios. Han de constituir primero un rebaño unido y santo.” ¿Cómo cambiarán el mundo si no son capaces de cambiarse a sí mismos, de cambiar sus iglesias?

Miremos dentro de nuestras iglesias primero y veamos si realmente somos diferentes de ese mundo que no conoce a Jesús.

Oración: Dios de amor, al comenzar este tiempo de Pascua, tú nos llamas a limpiar primero nuestras manos, nuestra casa, nuestras almas, para luego compartir tu palabra y el testimonio renovador de ella en nuestras vidas. Guíanos, sostennos y acompáñanos en este empeño. En el nombre de Jesús resucitado te lo pedimos. Amén.
