                                           THE NEARLY ETERNAL BLACKOUT 

                                                          PHILIPPIANS 2:12-18   

                                   And God said, let there be light, and there was light

The idea that any times in the past were better than ours today is an old one.

Jorge Manrique laconically expresses in one of the stanzas written on the occasion of his father’s death: “Any past time was better.”

The idea of a persistent “perverse generation” suggests a possibly undeniable separation existing between the world that should be according to Christian doctrine and the planet that in reality is, a continual contrast which divides the real from the ideal.

It is God who is working in us through our desire as much as through our doing. Creation in human beings doesn’t end at birth; God continues creating in us despite ourselves, to the extent that we are able to place ourselves in his hands.

We don’t look to the past as an excuse for our lack of consecration and commitment in the present. We have been called to radiate the light of the world, Jesus Christ; this we cannot hide despite our “darkness”.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world,” the only way to avoid the apparent “eternal blackout”.

Prayer:  Lord, let us be participants in the light of the world, Jesus Christ. Amen.

FILIPENSES 2:12-18

Y dijo Dios: Sea la luz y fue la luz.

                                    Génesis 1:3

La idea de que cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor que el nuestro, es vieja. Jorge Manrique expresa lacónicamente en una de las coplas escritas por la muerte de su padre: “Cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor”. La idea de una eterna “perversa generación” quiere darnos una prueba casi innegable de la separación que existe entre el mundo que debe ser según la doctrina cristiana y el planeta que en su realidad es. El continuo contraste entre lo real y lo ideal.

Es Dios el que obra en nosotros tanto el querer como el hacer. La creación en el ser humano no termina con el nacimiento; Dios sigue creando en nosotros y a pesar de nosotros; en la medida en que somos capaces de ponernos en sus manos. No miremos, pues, al pasado como una excusa por nuestra falta de consagración y entrega en el presente. Hemos sido llamados a irradiar la luz del mundo que es Jesucristo, la cual no podemos esconder a pesar de nuestra “oscuridad”.

Jesús dijo “Yo soy la luz del mundo,” el único camino para evitar el aparente “eterno apagón”.

Oración: Permite, Señor, que seamos partícipes de la luz del mundo, Jesucristo. Amén.
