DOUBT NOT JESUS
LUKE 7: 18-23
Blessed is the man
who does not fall away on account of me. Luke 7: 23
This phrase refers to the doubt arising in John the Baptist
concerning Jesus as Messiah. It’s a moment of marked hesitancy for the one who
was to prepare the way for the savior. What happened to the Baptist was that
perhaps Jesus’ manner of working didn’t correspond to the expectation of the
manner a Messiah should manifest himself. Nevertheless, Jesus affirms the seal
of his ministry through signs of holiness and social integration with the needy
around him.
Perhaps we today are in the same position as John in that we
don’t recognize God’s work, even though it’s right under our nose, simply because
it doesn’t look the way we want it to look. We’re constantly tempted to dictate
guidelines for God’s actions, and when those actions don’t appear the way we
expect, we’re reproachful and forget to thank him for what he’s doing in our
lives.
We should have the necessary discernment so as to “understand”
God’s signs that appear before us, and interpret them as divine will and not as
stumbling blocks. In this way - and only in this way - will we merit the qualifier
of “blessed” with which Jesus calls those who truly recognize him and do not
fall away because of him. May we open our spiritual eyes sufficiently today so
as to discover a brother in Jesus and not a possible stumbling block.
Prayer: Oh God, we implore you
for your light in order to discover your presence and will in our lives. Amen.

No dudemos de Jesús
Lucas 7:18-23
Y bienaventurado es aquel que no halle tropiezo en
mí.
Lucas 7:23
Esta frase se refiere a la duda que surge en Juan el
Bautista acerca del mesianismo de Jesús. Es un momento de franca debilidad de
aquel que había sido quien preparara el camino del salvador. Lo que le ocurrió
al Bautista es que quizás la manera en que obraba Jesús no se correspondía con
su expectativa de cómo debía manifestase
el Mesías. Sin embargo Jesús afirma el sello de su ministerio a través de
señales de sanidad e integración social de los necesitados y necesitadas que lo
rodeaban.
Quizás nosotros estemos hoy en la misma posición de Juan, y no reconozcamos
la obra de Dios aunque esté ante nuestras narices, sólo por el hecho de no ser
como nosotros queremos que sea. Estamos constantemente ante la tentación de
dictar pautas a Dios en su actuar, y cuando los hechos no responden a nuestras
expectativas entonces, o le reprochamos o no agradecemos por lo que él hace en
nuestras vidas.
Debemos tener el discernimiento necesario como para “comprender” los signos
de Dios que se presentan frente a nosotros, e interpretarlos como voluntad
divina y no como tropiezo. Así y sólo así mereceremos el calificativo de
“bienaventurados” con que Jesús llama a quienes lo reconocen verdaderamente y
no ven en él un tropiezo. Abramos hoy nuestros ojos espirituales suficientemente
como para descubrir en Jesús a un hermano y no una posibilidad de tropiezo.
Oración: Oh Dios, imploramos por tu luz para descubrir tu
presencia y tu voluntad en nuestras vidas. Amén.
