THE GOOD SCRIBE

Mark 12:28-34

“This is love: that we walk according to his commandments”

2 John 6

A stereotype can be a phrase that gains notoriety through repetition. At times we hear a phrase such as: Men never cry, women are poor drivers, pastors don’t work much, and all politicians are corrupt. This is true also in the readings of the New Testament where we see affirmations like: All tax collectors and Pharisees are bad people. It’s clear that the majority of Scribes and Pharisees who approached Jesus did it with the intention of putting him to the test; but this time was an exception, and Jesus is amenable to giving this Scribe an opportunity in the project of the kingdom.

For Jesus, religion consisted of loving God and one’s neighbor; and this is how he answered the Scribe when asked about the most important commandment.

For Jesus, the only way we have to prove that we really love God is by loving others. Jesus never asks anything of us that we can’t do. He doesn’t ask us to love more, rather he asks that we love others as we love ourselves. No one can say that he loves God if he doesn’t also love his brother and sister, who are the image of God himself.

Prayer:  It is good to praise you, Lord, and to sing psalms to your name, to announce your mercy in the morning and your faithfulness every night. Amen

Un estereotipo puede ser una frase que se fija a fuerza de repetirla. A menudo escuchamos frases como estas: los hombres nunca lloran…, ninguna mujer saber manejar bien…, los pastores trabajan poco…, todos los políticos son corruptos… También, de las lecturas del Nuevo Testamento, se ha vuelto un estereotipo afirmar que todos los cobradores de impuestos y los fariseos eran malas personas. Es muy cierto que la        mayoría de los escribas y fariseos que se acercaban a Jesús lo hacían con la intención de ponerlo a prueba, pero en esta ocasión no ocurre así y Jesús se muestra dispuesto a darle este escriba una oportunidad en el proyecto del Reino.

La religión para Jesús consistía en amar a Dios y amar al prójimo, eso fue lo que contestó a la pregunta del escriba acerca del mandamiento más importante.

Para Jesús la única forma que tenemos nosotros de probar que realmente amamos a Dios es amando a los demás. Jesús nunca nos pide nada que no podamos hacer, él no nos pide que amemos más, sino que amemos al otro o la otra igual que como nos amamos a nosotros mismos. Nadie puede decir que ama a Dios si no ama también a su hermano o a su hermana, que es la imagen de Dios mismo.

Oración: Bueno es alabarte, Señor, y cantar salmos a tu nombre, anunciar tu misericordia por la mañana y tu fidelidad todas las noche. Amén.
