BREAD OF LIFE
John 6:24-35
“I am the
living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will
live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the
world.”
John 6:51
As soon as we hear the word BREAD we
immediately think of the most universal of all foods. Even though bread can be made from different
products, it is present in the different cultures and geographic areas of
humanity.
The great lesson taught by today’s gospel
message is that God never forsakes us in our most fundamental needs for
survival. Jesus Christ, in imitation of
His Father God, multiplies bread and fish in order to feed a multitude of
hungry people. But that material bread that calms our hunger today is
insufficient if it is unaccompanied by faith.
Faith is what keeps us from distorting the image of God, seeing him only
as a benefactor who helps us to resolve our problems of the moment, and not as
He truly is: a holy and transcendental
God.
Faith frees
us from seeing Christianity and the Church as a charitable social agency or as
a free grocery store for resolving our material needs. This vision arises from the divorce between
faith and the social dimension of Christianity.
Bread without faith is lacking in Christian flavor. Faith without bread is lacking in flavor
altogether.
Prayer: Lord, give
us this bread of life for ever more. Amen.
PAN DE VIDA
Juan 6:24-35
“Yo soy el pan vivo que descendió del cielo.
Si alguno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre”

Cuando pronunciamos la palabra PAN inmediatamente pensamos en el más
universal de todos los alimentos. El pan, aunque pueda estar elaborado a partir
de diferentes productos, está presente en las diferentes culturas y geografías
de la humanidad.
La gran lección que este evangelio de hoy nos enseña es que Dios no
nos abandona nunca en nuestras necesidades más fundamentales de subsistencia. Jesucristo,
imitando a Dios su Padre, ante una multitud que desfallece de hambre,
multiplica los panes y los peces. Pero ese pan material que nos calma el hambre
de hoy, es insuficiente si no va acompañado por la fe. La fe impide que
distorsionemos la imagen de Dios, viéndolo solo como un benefactor que nos
ayuda a resolver nuestros problemas temporales, y no como lo que realmente es:
un Dios trascendente y santo.
La fe nos libra de ver al cristianismo y a la Iglesia
como una agencia de beneficencia social o un mercado gratuito para resolver las
necesidades materiales de la gente. Esa visión surge del divorcio entre la fe y
la dimensión social del cristianismo. El pan sin la fe carece de sabor
cristiano. La fe sin pan simplemente no tiene sabor.

danos siempre este pan de vida. Amén
