A MATTER OF SCALE

Luke 19:1-10

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”

1 Corinthians 1:27

Isaac Watts was the author of many hymns which we sing today in church. Isaac was a man of ‘short stature’. In his adulthood, he wrote verses based on the following topic which, when translated into Spanish prose says: “If I were tall enough to cling to heaven itself by my hand, that would not be my true stature: the stature of man is his soul.”

Zacchaeus was also a man “of short stature,” but that was no impediment for the chief of tax collectors when it came to receiving Jesus’s favor, who when he saw him up in the tree, said to him: “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”

A person’s stature is not measured by his physical height, or by his excellent intelligence, nor by the riches he possesses.  It is measured by his qualities, and, at the same time, by the service that he gives to God and to humans through their use.

God measures all human beings in this way, be they his servants or his enemies.  

Prayer: Lord, thank you for not showing partiality among people, because you prefer the weak over the strong, the foolish over the wise. Amen.

Isaac Watts fue autor de muchos himnos que actualmente cantamos en la iglesia. Isaac era más bien bajo de estatura.  En su adultez, escribió en verso el siguiente pensamiento que, traducido en prosa española, dice “Si yo fuera tan alto que con mi mano pudiera asirme del cielo mismo, esa no sería mi verdadera estatura: la estatura del hombre es el alma”.

También Zaqueo era “de baja estatura”, pero eso no fue un impedimento para que el jefe de los cobradores de impuestos recibiera el favor de Jesús, quien al verlo trepado en el árbol, le dijo: “Zaqueo, apúrate y baja de allí, porque hoy tengo que pasar la noche en tu casa”.

La altura de una persona no se mide por su elevada estatura, o por su inteligencia sobresaliente, o por las riquezas que posee: se mide por sus cualidades y, al mismo tiempo, por el servicio que con ellas da a Dios y al género humano.

Dios mide así a todos los seres humanos, ya sean sus siervos o sus enemigos.

Oración: Señor, gracias porque tú no haces distinción de personas, porque prefieres al débil que al fuerte, al necio que al sabio. Amén.
