THE CLUB OF 120
YEARS
Proverbs 9:6
“Seek the LORD and live.”
Amos 5:6
Methuselah is a strange character in the Holy
Scriptures. The only thing that we know about him is that he lived many years
and that he fathered many children. The author of Genesis was not particularly
impressed by him and by his life. In contrast to Christ we see him as darker
still. We saw the Lord consecrate his
life to the solution to serious problems, not even sparing his own life in
order to resolve them. His journey
through the world was brief, but his spiritual influence has been felt in all
spheres of life for over twenty centuries.
The point of life is not whether one lives a
shorter or longer time, nor whether one becomes a member of the “Club of 120
years,” but rather of living life fully and abundantly.
Fear, anxiety and defeatism accost human beings
throughout their existence, even if it is as long as that of Methuselah. The victory goes only to those who learn how
to live.
Living fully
means attaining the “abundant” life which is reached only when you meet the
Lord, and when you faithfully follow his precepts.
Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, for the gift of life which you have given me. Grant that I may always be able to live it
abundantly. Amen.

Matusalén
es un personaje extraño en las Sagradas Escrituras. Lo único que sabemos de é1
es que vivió muchos años y que engendró hijos. El autor del Génesis no quedó
impresionado en lo absoluto con él y su trayectoria. Contrastándolo con Cristo
lo vemos más opaco todavía. Al Señor le vimos consagrar su vida a la solución
de graves problemas, no escatimando ni su propia vida para resolverlos. Su
travesía por el mundo fue breve, pero por más de veinte siglos su influencia
espiritual se ha hecho sentir en todas las esferas de la vida.
La
cuestión de la vida no es vivir más o menos, ni estar o no en el “club de los
120 años”, sino vivir a plenitud.
El
temor, la zozobra y el derrotismo acosan a los seres humanos a través de su
existencia, aunque fuese tan larga como la de Matusalén. Solo sale victorioso
aquel que aprende a vivir.
Vivir en plenitud significa alcanzar la vida “abundante” que se alcanza
solo cuando encuentras al Señor, y cumples fielmente sus preceptos.
Oración: Bendito seas Señor por el don de la vida que me has dado, permite que pueda
vivirla siempre plenamente. Amén.
