WHY WASN’T GANDHI A CHRISTIAN?

Matthew 18:6-9

“And you will give testimony also,

because you have been with me from the beginning ”

John 15:27

Gandhi remained Hindu until the end; he praised Christ as one of the incarnations of God, but not as the only God. He never took the final step to become Christian.

In an autobiography published in India he says that in his student days he was greatly impressed reading the Gospels, and seriously thought about being baptized and becoming a member of the Christian church. He thought Christianity had the solution to the racial prejudices and caste differences that affected India and South Africa.

One Sunday morning Gandhi went to a nearby Christian church with the objective of speaking to the pastor about becoming a Christian when the service ended. When he entered the sanctuary the reception committee denied him a seat, suggesting that he go to a black church. Gandhi left that church never to return. “If the Christians have class differences as well,” he reasoned, “I’ll stay Hindu and attack evil from there.”

A gesture or oversight on our part – or worse even, a mistreatment--may lead a person to reject the Gospels. Are you making a good testimony in your family, your school, work and church?

Prayer:  My God, may my testimony always be a mirror that faithfully reflects your Gospel. Amen.

¿POR QUÉ GANDHI NO FUE CRISTIANO?

Gandhi permaneció hindú hasta el final. Adoraba a Cristo como una de las encarnaciones de Dios, no como la única. Nunca dio el paso final para hacerse cristiano.

En una autobiografía que se publicó en la India, él dice que en sus días de estudiante se impresionó mucho al leer los evangelios, y que pensó seriamente en bautizarse y ser miembro de una iglesia cristiana. Pensaba que en el cristianismo estaba la solución a los prejuicios raciales y a las diferencias de casta que afectan a la India y a África del Sur.

Un domingo por la mañana, Gandhi fue a una iglesia cristiana que estaba cerca, y tenía el propósito de hablar con el pastor al terminar el culto, para hacerse cristiano. Cuando entró en el templo, el comité de recepción se negó a proporcionarle un asiento, y le sugirió que fuera a una iglesia de negros. Gandhi salió de aquel templo para no volver más. “Si también los cristianos tienen diferencias de clases –pensó- permaneceré siendo hindú, y desde allí atacaré el mal”.

Un gesto o un descuido nuestro, o peor aún, un maltrato nuestro puede hacer que una persona rechace el Evangelio. ¿Estás dando un buen testimonio en tu familia, en tu escuela, en tu trabajo o en tu iglesia?

Oración: Dios mío, que mi testimonio sea siempre un espejo que refleje fielmente tu Evangelio. Amén.
