AROMA OF CHRIST
2 Corinthians 2:14-17

“…and walk in love, just as Christ loved you
and gave himself up for us,
an offering and sacrifice to God
as a fragrant aroma.”

Ephesians 5:2

When we leave a house where people have been smoking, we are immediately impregnated with a strong and unpleasant cigar odor on our clothes and on our skin, too. And the people who draw near us perceive it right away and show their displeasure. The opposite happens when we use a good perfume, leaving a pleasing aromatic trail behind us.

Reading the text in Corinthians I recall Mary when she poured her expensive perfume over the feet of the Lord. “And the house filled with the scent of perfume.” And the other woman in Simon the Pharisee’s house washed the Master’s feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. And I thought, after her having done so, her hair must have been permeated with Jesus’ sweet aroma.

Think for a moment today: What smell are you carrying with you when you leave? Is it the odor of anxiety, envy, egotism, or is it the pleasant scent of Christ’s love? The answer will depend on where you may have been and what you may have been doing. In passing, try to leave in your wake the aroma of Christ.

Prayer:  God of love, may my acts and attitudes always carry the fragrant aroma of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

AROMA DE CRISTO
2 Corintios 2:14-17
