AN ATTACHMENT
TO RICHES
Mark
10:17-30
“The Son of Man came to seek and to save what
was lost.”
Luke 19:10
The question of who will be saved has been a
historical concern to many Christians. There have been and continue to be different
interpretations in this regard: whether
it is only by predestination, or through works, or only for the poor, or also for
the rich. In short, there is no human interpretation that can offer us a
definite answer, and this is because salvation is not determined by any human
being or social group, thank God!
Jesus himself warns that “it is difficult to
enter the kingdom of heaven” and he emphasizes this idea by saying that: “It is easier for a camel to go through the
eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” What
Jesus is calling an impediment to entering the Kingdom is an excessive attachment
to riches, especially when this turns into idolatry and distances us from what
is essential in life.
What condemned the
man who walked away from his encounter with Jesus was his attachment to riches. This was altogether different from the case
of Zacchaeus, who, even though he possessed riches, was able to receive
salvation because he committed himself to sharing his wealth: “I give half
of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I
will pay back four times the amount.”
What kinds of goods
make up your “riches”? What is your
relationship to your “riches”? Do they draw you nearer to God or distance you
from Him?
Prayer: Free me from the temptation to leave my
salvation in the hands of what does not save but corrupts.
EL APEGO A LAS RIQUEZAS

La
pregunta acerca de quiénes pueden salvarse inquieta a muchos cristianos, a lo
largo de la historia. Han existido y existen diferentes interpretaciones al
respecto: que si son solo los predestinados, que si es por obras, que si son
solo los pobres, que si los ricos también, en fin que no existe ninguna
interpretación humana que pueda ofrecernos una respuesta definitiva, y es así
porque la salvación no la determina ningún ser humano o grupo social, ¡gracias
a Dios!
El
mismo Jesús advierte que “es difícil entrar en el reino de los cielos”,
y a continuación enfatiza esta idea diciendo que: “Es más fácil que un
camello pase por el ojo de la aguja, que el que un rico entre en el Reino de
Dios”. Lo que Jesús señala como impedimento
para entrar en el Reino es el apego desordenado a las riquezas, sobre todo
cuando esta se convierte en idolatría y nos aleja de lo que es esencial en la
vida.
Lo que condena al hombre que salió al encuentro de
Jesús es su apego a las riquezas, algo diferente al caso de Zaqueo, que aun
poseyendo riquezas pudo recibir salvación porque se comprometió a compartir su
riqueza: “la mitad de mis bienes se la doy a los pobres, y a quien le haya
defraudado le restituyo cuatro veces más”.
¿Qué
tipos de bienes constituyen tus “riquezas”? ¿Cómo es tu relación con tus
“riquezas”? ¿Te acercan o te alejan de Dios?
Oración:
Líbrame
de la tentación de dejar mi salvación en manos de lo que no salva y corrompe.
