GO AND DO LIKEWISE

Luke 10:25-37 

“…God does not show favoritism.”

Acts 10:34

Taking the love of Jesus to others can be something that we practice with a bias, by excluding some people or by favoring others and we are not willing to announce the message to everyone. Many factors are involved; some have to do with our preferences, but others have to do with our prejudices, or even with our inability to see that everyone needs to know the Lord’s love.

Let us look at some examples in order to illustrate this: I might tell the gospel message to a certain neighbor with whom I get along, or because I assume that he’s going to listen to me. Whereas, with certain others, I would not ever think of doing that: why bother, they are never going to believe.  And we make an a priori judgment that places doubt upon the sovereignty and mercy of God. Who can say with certainty that a particular person will ‘never’ accept the gospel?  Finally, how many people close to us have never heard a single word from us relating to faith! We may feel incapable of saying anything because our behavior has not previously reflected our beliefs to them in a favorable light.

And what is undoubtedly most difficult is how to carry that love in word and in deed to those whom our prejudices reject, those “Samaritans” in our lives today.   Nevertheless, the Lord continues to insist that we: “Go and do likewise.” 

Prayer: Eternal God, your commands must be obeyed.  You are a God of love and compassion without exclusion to anyone. Do not allow our prejudices to keep us from accomplishing the great commission of preaching your Gospel to all creatures.

El llevar a otros el amor de Jesús puede ser algo que nosotros mismos parcialicemos, excluimos a unos o preferimos a otros, y no estamos dispuestos a anunciar a todos el mensaje. Aquí se involucran muchos factores; algunos tienen que ver con nuestras preferencias, pero otros tienen que ver con nuestros prejuicios, o incluso con nuestra incapacidad de ver la necesidad que tienen todas las personas de conocer el amor del Señor.

Pongamos algunos ejemplos para ilustrar lo que queremos decir: tal vez le predico a un vecino porque me cae bien, o porque asumo que me va a escuchar; a determinadas gentes ni hablar, para qué..., esos no van a creer nunca, y hacemos una valoración a priori que pone en dudas la soberanía y la misericordia de Dios. ¿Quién puede afirmar que determinada persona ‘nunca’ va a aceptar el evangelio?; finalmente, ¡cuánta gente cercana nunca ha oído de nosotros una palabra relativa a la fe! Nos sentimos incapaces de decir nada quizás porque nuestra conducta no les ha hablado previamente a favor de nuestra creencia.

Y lo más difícil, sin dudas, es llevar ese amor en palabras y hechos a aquellos a los que nuestros prejuicios rechazan, los “samaritanos” de hoy en nuestro medio; no obstante, el Señor nos sigue insistiendo: “ve y haz tú lo mismo”.

Oración: Dios eterno, tus mandatos deben ser obedecidos. Tú eres un Dios de amor y compasión sin acepción de personas. No permitas que nuestros prejuicios nos aparten de cumplir la gran comisión de predicar tu Evangelio a toda criatura.
