ON THE ROAD
Luke 9:1-6
“Do not take
any gold or silver or copper in your belts; take no bag for the journey, or
extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.”

The disciples were sent by Jesus to perform a
massive labor of preaching and compassion, teaching about and proclaiming the
kingdom of God and healing the sick. But
the commission given by Jesus had very clear specifications: to take nothing
for the journey. They had to depend absolutely on the grace of God and on whatever
hospitality they could find. And even if hospitality was a distinctive aspect
within those ancient cultures, it is not difficult to imagine that not everyone
would offer it for even a brief period of time. Jesus himself warned them that
this could happen when he told them to shake the dust off their sandals in
those places where they were not welcomed. In spite of the doubts generated by
this, the twelve went out on mission, and the results were surprising.
A while later, Jesus himself recognizes the
usefulness of this strategy for missionary extension and sends out some seventy
disciples (Luke 10:1). They equally return with great joy upon seeing the
impacting signs of the kingdom’s presence (Luke 10:17).
Preaching the gospel is made effective not
through the planning of resources or by the academic preparation of those sent,
but rather because their effectiveness is rooted solely in the powerful work of
the Spirit. The Spirit works in those
who approach willingly and with the understanding that it is only the Spirit
who convinces and moves hearts to accept the words that we proclaim in the name
of Jesus.
Prayer: I have need of your Spirit, oh God, in order to
be able to proclaim your truths and to announce the Gospel to all creatures.
SALIR AL CAMINO
Lucas 9:1-6

para el camino, ni dos túnicas, ni calzado, ni bastón;
porque el obrero es digno de su alimento”

Los discípulos fueron enviados por Jesús en una labor masiva de
predicación y compasión, enseñando y proclamando acerca del reino de Dios y
sanando enfermos. Pero la comisión dada por Jesús tenía sus especificaciones
bien claras: no lleven nada para el camino. Tenían que depender en absoluto de
la gracia de Dios y de la hospitalidad que pudieran encontrar, y aunque la
hospitalidad era un signo distintivo en estas culturas de la antigüedad, no es
difícil imaginarse que no todo el mundo la ofrecería por un período de tiempo
aunque breve. El propio Jesús les alerta que tal cosa pudiera ocurrir cuando
les dice que sacudieran el polvo de sus sandalias en aquellos lugares donde no
les recibieran. No obstante las dudas que esto pudiera generar, los doce salen
en misión, y los resultados fueron sorprendentes.
Más adelante el propio Jesús reconoce lo útil de esta estrategia de
extensión misionera y envía entonces a unos setenta (Lucas 10:1), quienes
igualmente regresan con gran gozo al ver las señales impactantes de la
presencia del reino (Lucas 10:17).
La predicación se hace efectiva no por la planificación de recursos o la
preparación académica de los enviados, sino que su eficacia radica solamente en
la poderosa obra del Espíritu obrando en quienes se acercan con disposición
obediente y reconociendo que tan solo es el Espíritu el que convence y mueve a
los corazones a aceptar esa palabra que proclamamos en el nombre de Jesús.
Oración: Necesito de tu Espíritu, oh Dios, para poder
proclamar tus verdades y anunciar el Evangelio a toda criatura.
