AND JOHN THE BAPTIST WAS BORN…

Luke 1:57-66

“Lead me in your truth and teach me,

for you are the God of my salvation”

Psalm 25:5

Elizabeth was barren, like many Old Testament women, but God took pity on her, transforming infertility into fecundity.

Elizabeth hid herself for many months during her pregnancy. On seeing her body after five months, people could confirm that God had been good to Elizabeth, and everyone rejoiced with her.

Zechariah is made mute. He had accepted the suffering with pain and had learned to be humble.  

Elizabeth conceives John in her heart, while Zechariah, in silence, recovers his faith and trust in God. The miracle was given to both.  

Spiritual life is constructed upon small or great miracles which are given in that intimate sphere of the soul that only God and all who receive them know. Zechariah could speak only when he said “yes” to God’s plan and accepted that the child would be named John.

The announcement of Christmas, with its new birth already so close, should stimulate us. He who is being born is also, as in Zechariah’s case, a new man, a man touched by God. May we go out to meet Jesus; let us prepare ourselves in spirit.

Prayer:  Lord, I say “yes” to your will for me, fully trusting that for me it will be present and future happiness.

Y NACIÓ JUAN EL BAUTISTA… 

Lucas 1:57-66

“Señor, todo el día espero en ti, ¡enséñame a caminar

en tu verdad, pues tú eres mi Dios y salvador!”

Salmo 25:5

Como tantas mujeres del Antiguo Testamento, Isabel era estéril, pero Dios tuvo piedad de ella transformando la esterilidad en fecundidad.

Embarazada, Isabel se escondió durante cinco meses. Cuando después de cinco meses, la gente pudo comprobar en su cuerpo como Dios  había sido bueno con Isabel, todos se alegraron con ella.

Zacarías está mudo. Él había aceptado con dolor este sufrimiento y había aprendido a ser humilde.

Isabel concibió a Juan en su seno, mientras Zacarías, en silencio, recobró la fe y confianza en Dios.

En ambos se dio el milagro. La vida espiritual se construye a base de pequeños o grandes milagros que se dan en esa esfera íntima del alma, que sólo Dios y cada uno conoce. Zacarías pudo hablar sólo cuando dijo “sí” al plan de Dios y aceptar que el niño se llamará Juan.

El anuncio de la Navidad, con su nuevo nacimiento tan cercano ya, nos debe estimular. Quien nace es también, como en el caso de Zacarías, un hombre nuevo, un hombre tocado por Dios. Salgamos al encuentro de Jesús, preparemos nuestro espíritu.

Oración: Señor, digo “sí” a lo que Tú dispongas, confiando plenamente en que será para mi felicidad presente y futura.
