THE CENTRALITY OF THE WORD
JEREMIAH 1: 2-9
‟Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path!”
Psalm 119:105
I can shut
my eyes and imagine that I am sitting in one of the seats of the church that I
attended as a boy. In the center of the
platform there was a pulpit, and in front of the pulpit stood some palm trees
in large metal planters. Along the back
wall, at each corner, were flags: the
national flag and the Christian flag.
But what stood out the most without a doubt was that pulpit.
In the
1950s the custom was to situate the pulpit at one end and the lectern at the
other. This coincided with the arrival of the new pastor who had recently
graduated from the Seminary. Had the
Seminary Chapel influenced this decision?
The fact
is that placing the pulpit in the center was not accidental; it was placed
there in order to highlight the importance given to the Word within the
Reformed Church. When the Scriptures are
read during the worship service, our response is: “The
Word of the Lord” or “We hear you,
Lord.”
Do you
acknowledge the centrality of the Word in your life? Are you willing to put his
Word into practice today?
Prayer: Father, help us to put your Word at the center of our lives and not to the
side where we sometimes have it. Grant
that we not be mere listeners of the Word, but doers as well. Amen.
LA CENTRALIDAD DE LA PALABRA JEREMÍAS 1: 2-9
‟Tu palabra es una lámpara a mis pies;

Puedo cerrar los ojos e imaginarme que estoy
sentado en las sillas del templo al que asistía de niño. En el centro de la
plataforma había un púlpito, delante del púlpito unos largos maceteros de metal
donde se colocaban unas arecas. Junto a la pared del fondo, en cada extremo,
dos banderas: la nacional y la cristiana. Pero sin dudas lo que resaltaba era
aquel púlpito.
En la década de los cincuenta se comenzó con la
moda de colocar el púlpito a un extremo y un lectorio al otro. Esto se
produjo con la llegada del nuevo pastor que hacía poco tiempo se había graduado
en el Seminario. ¿Influyó la capilla del Seminario en esta decisión?
El hecho cierto es que la colocación del púlpito
en el centro no era por pura casualidad; estaba allí para resaltar la importancia
que se le daba a la Palabra en la Iglesia Reformada. Cuando se lee las
Escrituras en el culto respondemos: “Palabra del Señor” o “Te
escuchamos Señor”
¿Reconoces pues la centralidad de la Palabra en tu
vida? ¿Estás dispuesto a poner en práctica su Palabra hoy?
Oración: Padre, ayúdanos a poner
tu Palabra en el centro de nuestras vidas y no a un lado donde a veces la
tenemos. Permite que no seamos solamente oidores de la Palabra, sino también
hacedores. Amén
