IF WE BELIEVE, WE
WILL SEE HIS GLORY
JOHN 11:25-44
“Jesus said to her, ‘I
am the resurrection and the life.
He who believes in me
will live, even though he dies.’”

What a sad and holy moment:
the death of a loved one! There are many rites that take place in our culture.
After giving the final adios to that
loved his friends and family proceed to the cemetery in
silent procession. For Christian persons it’s common to offer a service where
testimony to life and the resurrection is affirmed. Perhaps we may return one
day to leave flowers and spend a bit of time remembering the glad moments shared
with that person. Our loved one has died and cannot be brought back.
Jesus cried when he
was before Lazarus’ tomb; yes, but he returned and commanded that the stone
that was blocking the entrance be removed. Later, he exercised his power and
ordered, “Lazarus, come out!”
Perhaps we may desire
with all our heart to have the power to bring back a loved one, but if we spoke
those orders nothing would happen. Nevertheless, we can remove the stone of
depression that immobilizes us; we can remove the stone of lack of faith that
impedes us from believing that Jesus is the resurrection and the life.
It’s always difficult
for us to explain the resurrection, as it was perhaps for Martha and Mary,
Lazarus’ sisters, at that moment. But this is because we cannot explain with
reasoning something that we should believe by faith. Our loved one who has departed
is with us yet in another way. And only
by hoping in Jesus, if we then believe, will we see his glory.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we ask
that you give us strength when we lose our loved ones, and that we may always trust
that we will be reunited after death when we are in your presence. Amen.

¡Qué
momento tan triste y sagrado la muerte de un ser querido! Son muchos los ritos
que tienen lugar en nuestra cultura: después de darle el último adiós a esa
persona querida que se nos fue, amigos y familiares vamos al cementerio, en
silenciosa procesión. Para las personas cristianas es común ofrecer un servicio
donde se afirma el testimonio de vida y la esperanza de la resurrección. Tal
vez regresemos algún día, a dejar flores y pasar un rato recordando los buenos
momentos vividos al lado de esa persona. Nuestro ser querido ha muerto y no lo
podemos traer de vuelta.
Cuando
Jesús estuvo frente a la tumba de su amigo Lázaro, lloró, sí, pero regresó y
mandó a quitar la piedra que bloqueaba la entrada. Luego ejerció su poder y
ordenó: “¡Lázaro, ven fuera!”.
Tal
vez deseemos de todo corazón el poder traer de vuelta a un ser querido, pero si
nosotros diéramos esas órdenes, no pasaría nada. Sin embargo, podemos quitar la
piedra de la depresión que nos inmoviliza, podemos quitar la piedra de la falta
de fe que nos impide creer en que Jesús es la resurrección y la vida. Siempre
nos es difícil explicarnos la resurrección, como quizás para Marta y María,
hermanas de Lázaro, lo fue en aquel momento, pero es que no podemos explicar
con razonamientos algo que debemos creer por fe. Nuestro ser querido que se ha
ido está con nosotros de otra manera, y sólo esperemos en Jesús, pues si
creemos veremos su gloria.
Oración: Señor
Jesús, te pedimos que nos des fuerza cuando perdemos a nuestros seres queridos,
que tengamos siempre la confianza de que nos reencontraremos después de la
muerte, cuando estemos en tu presencia.
Amén.
