SIGNS OF THE TIMES

II TIMOTHY 3:1-5

“There will be terrible times in the last days.…”

II Timothy 3:1

Human beings, from the story of the fall of Adam and Eve to this very day, have yearned to be freed from obligations and authority. Today, more than ever, society wishes to be freed of moral rules, the heritage of religious ethics, of customs, of laws . . . . They think that in this way they can achieve what they believe to be freedom but which, in reality, is slavery and the inclination to wickedness.

The word wickedness or evil is defined in the Bible as sin, disobedience, rebellion, lying, idolatry, impurity, etc. These days we see a worrying progression of evil, especially in the area of customs and social behavior. Disrespect for the sanctity of the body carries with it as a consequence sexual violence, the commercialization of pleasure and a lack of reproductive rights. Many parents have failed to transmit to their children the moral values which they themselves have abandoned. This abandonment of training leads to violence and exclusion through many generations.

Brothers and sisters, our times are difficult. Let us stay alert lest we become accustomed to evil and our conscience weakens. The Lord placed us in the world not as if we were of the world, but rather that we might be his witnesses, remembering that while times change, the truth of God’s Word never changes. Let our lives so stand as an example that they may be a positive sign of God in these troubled times.

Prayer: Lord, we ask you to be with us in the rearing of our children, lest we succumb to evil. Keep us from falling into sin.  Amen.

II TIMOTEO 3:1-5

“En los postreros días vendrán tiempos peligrosos…”

II Timoteo 3:1

El ser humano, desde el relato de la caída de Adán  y Eva hasta hoy día, ha querido liberarse de las obligaciones y de la autoridad. Hoy más que nunca la sociedad quiere librarse de las reglas morales, herencia de las éticas religiosas, de las costumbres, de las leyes... Piensa que de este modo puede acceder a lo que ella cree que es la libertad, pero que en realidad es la esclavitud y el apego a la maldad.

La palabra maldad está definida en la Biblia como pecado, desobediencia, rebelión, mentira, idolatría, impureza, etc.

En nuestros días constatamos un inquietante progreso del mal, sobre todo en el ámbito de las costumbres y el comportamiento social. El irrespeto a la sacralidad del cuerpo tiene como consecuencia la violencia sexual, el comercio del placer, la falta de derechos reproductivos. Numerosos padres renunciaron a transmitir a sus hijos los valores morales que ellos mismos abandonaron. Este abandono de la educación conduce a muchas generaciones a la violencia y la exclusión.

Hermanos y hermanas, nuestra época es difícil. Velemos para no acostumbrarnos al mal y para evitar que nuestra conciencia se debilite. El Señor   nos deja en el mundo, pero no como si fuéramos de este, sino para que seamos sus testigos, recordando que los tiempos pasan, pero las verdades de su Palabra no cambian.  Que nuestra vida se erija como ejemplo, como un signo positivo de Dios en estos convulsos tiempos.

Oración: Señor, te pedimos que nos acompañes en la educación de nuestros hijos e hijas, que no nos dejemos vencer por la fuerza del mal. Susténtanos para no caer en el pecado. Amén.
