BEING A COMMUNITY

MATTHEW 9:35-38

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,

because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a pastor.

Matthew 9:36

A few days ago I passed by a park and took a seat on one of its benches in the shade of a flamboyán tree. In the past, whenever I’d done this, the children’s games and laughter, the lovers’ smiles, and the peacefulness of elderly people had always entertained me. But on this occasion, the park didn’t have this magic, because the people gathered there were pursuing a single objective: to connect on their cell phones to some family member or friend abroad. I remembered Jesus’ compassion upon observing the multitudes. I asked myself when that park had ceased being a magical place to socialize or chat directly with one another about baseball or some other issue of national consequence. Arriving home I asked my sons, “Where do the boys and girls play now?  Where do people fall in love?” They laughed at me and answered, “Mom, now all this can be done just as well by telephone or computer.”

I understand that for many families the possibility of communicating with family members who have emigrated is very important, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that our human relationships are more than text messages.

Through Jesus, we learned the importance of being a community, of visiting the sick, of accompanying the needy, of sharing bread and fish with friends.  In short, let us not become scattered and distant; nothing can ever substitute for the richness of a human relationship, as close and as direct as that which God has with us.

Prayer:  Our God, thank you for your closeness. Help us to be evermore an image of you, becoming more humane and closer to one another. Amen.

SER COMUNIDAD

MATEO 9:35-38

Al ver las multitudes tuvo compasión de ellas, porque estaban

desamparadas y dispersas como ovejas que no tienen pastor

Hace unos días pasé por un parque y me senté en uno de sus bancos a la sombra de un framboyán.  Antes cuando hacía esto siempre me entretenía  con el juego y la risa de los niños, la sonrisa de los enamorados, la paz de las personas ancianas, etc…  Solo que en esta ocasión el parque no tenía esta magia, pues las personas que allí se encontraban  perseguían un único objetivo: conectarse  a través de sus teléfonos móviles con algún familiar o amigo que reside en el extranjero. Recordé la compasión de Jesús al observar las multitudes. Me pregunto cuándo aquel parque dejó de ser ese lugar mágico para socializar, conversar directamente sobre el béisbol u otro asunto de la realidad nacional. Al llegar a casa pregunté a mis hijos:  ¿Dónde juegan los niños y las niñas ahora?  ¿Dónde se enamora la gente? Ellos se rieron de mí y me contestaron: mami, ahora todo eso se puede hacer también a través del teléfono o la computadora.

Entiendo que es muy importante para muchas familias la posibilidad de comunicarse con familiares que han emigrado, pero no perdamos de vista que nuestras relaciones humanas son más que mensajes de texto. Con Jesús aprendimos la importancia de ser comunidad, de visitar a los enfermos, acompañar a los necesitados, comer algo de pan y de pescado con los amigos. En fin, no nos dispersemos, nunca nada podrá sustituir la riqueza de una relación humana, cercana y directa como la que Dios tiene con nosotros.

Oración: Dios nuestro, gracias por tu cercanía. Ayúdanos a ser cada vez más imagen tuya, siendo más humanos y más cercanos unos de otros. Amén.
