A TIME TO TEAR DOWN AND A TIME TO BUILD
JEREMIAH 1:4-10
“Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over
nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to
build and to plant.”
Jeremiah 1:9-10
Jeremiah received a call to complete a mission. The first part of the verse
calls for destruction. At first it is disconcerting that the mission consists
of it; but as we read the verse in its entirety, and focus on our world today,
we realize the significance of the duty entrusted to him. The prophet was to destroy
and combat injustice, evil, the abuse of power, corruption and all the social
evils of his day.
This duty poses a great challenge to us as well today. I’m referring to
those evils that are the result of loving false gods, such as the excessive
need for individual recognition, or of obtaining material goods. We should each
look at our interior worlds and destroy whatever distances us from God. Once we have done this, we can construct and
plant all that promotes peace within us and contribute to the peace of our
environment.
We are challenged to build love toward our Creator, toward our neighbor and
even toward ourselves. We cannot ignore the responsibility to build good
relationships; to construct all the values that strengthen our faith; to care
for our natural environment; to attend to and care for the most vulnerable, for
the sick, the elderly, children and the needy.
Jeremiah made excuses for God’s calling.
We too have many excuses. Like
the Lord said to Jeremiah, He says to us: Do
not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you. (1:8)
Prayer: Lord, give us the strength to accomplish the mission
to transform our lives and to improve the natural and social environment in
which we love. In the name of Jesus we
pray. Amen.

TIEMPO DE DESTRUIR Y TIEMPO DE CONSTRUIR
JEREMÍAS 1: 4-10
Yo pongo mis palabras en tus labios. Hoy te doy plena
autoridad
sobre reinos y naciones, para arrancar, derribar,
para destruir y demoler, y también para construir y
plantar.
Jeremías 1: 10
Jeremías recibió un llamado para llevar a cabo una
misión. La primera parte del verso leído insta a la destrucción. En un primer
momento preocupa que la tarea consista
en ello; pero al leer el verso en su totalidad,
y fijar la vista en nuestro mundo de hoy, nos damos cuenta del
significado de la tarea que se le encomendaba. El profeta debía derribar,
combatir la injusticia, la maldad, el abuso del poder, la corrupción y todos
los males sociales de entonces. Tarea que resulta un gran desafío también para
nosotros hoy. Hablo de esos males que son el resultado del amor a dioses falsos, como la necesidad desmedida de reconocimiento
individual, o la obtención de bienes materiales. Individualmente debemos mirar
hacia nuestro mundo interior y destruir lo que nos aparta de Dios. Una vez
hecho esto, podemos construir y plantar
todo lo que propicie la paz, interior y
contribuir a la paz a nuestro alrededor. Somos desafiados a construir amor
hacia nuestro Creador, hacia nuestro prójimo y hacia nosotros mismos. Construir
buenas relaciones, construir todos los valores que fortalezcan nuestra fe, el
cuidado del entorno natural, la atención a los vulnerables, enfermos, ancianos,
niños y a quienes nos necesiten, son responsabilidades que no podemos eludir.
Jeremías puso excusas al llamado de Dios. También
nosotros tenemos muchas excusas. Como a Jeremías, el Señor nos dice: No tengas miedo de
nadie, pues yo estoy contigo para protegerte. Yo, el Señor, te doy mi palabra. (v.8)
Oración: Señor, Danos fuerzas para cumplir la misión de
transformar nuestras vidas y hacer que el entorno natural y social en que vivimos sea mejor. En el nombre de
Jesús oramos. Amén
