YOU HAVE GREAT FAITH!
MATTHEW 15:21-28
Then
Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.”

The gospel
of Matthew is characterized by presenting Jesus as a Jew. In this text that particularity of the Teacher
is emphasized as of his encounter with a Canaanite woman. She, who is not part of the “chosen people,” behaves
in such a way that she embodies the ideal way in which the children of Israel
ought to be.
After crying
out insistingly so that Jesus would heal her daughter, this woman receives a
very harsh and unexpected response from the one person in whom she had
undoubtedly placed all her hopes.
And yet the
ending of this anecdote shows the customary Jesus to be compassionate, just,
inclusive…just as we are used to finding him. “Woman, you have great faith!” With
these words the Teacher makes it clear that being a son or daughter of God
makes no distinction of race or nationality: there are no more dogs or their
owners, no Jews or Greeks, no servants or freemen, no males or females. Nationality, social condition and gender no
longer determine exclusion or privilege.
The good
news is that we are loved by God. We
have the right to come to him and, as did the woman in the story, to show him
how great our faith is without worrying about our condition, so that God can
say: man, woman, you have great faith!

God for all men and women, for all of your creation. Stay with us always and encourage us on our
journey. Amen.

¡QUÉ GRANDE ES TU FE!

Entonces le dijo Jesús-¡Mujer, qué
grande es tu fe!
Hágase como quieres”

El evangelio de Mateo se caracteriza por presentar a Jesús como judío.
En este texto tal particularidad del Maestro resalta a partir de su encuentro
con una mujer cananea. Ella, que no es parte del “pueblo escogido”, se conduce
de tal manera que encarna el ideal de cómo debieran ser los hijos de Israel.
Después de clamar insistentemente para que Jesús sanara a su hija, esta
mujer recibe una muy dura e inesperada respuesta por parte de aquel en quien
sin dudas ella había puesto todas las esperanzas.
Sin embargo el final de la anécdota muestra al acostumbrado Jesús
compasivo, justo, incluyente... que estamos acostumbrados a encontrarnos.
¡Mujer, qué grande es tu fe! Con estas palabras el Maestro deja claro que ser
hijo o hija de Dios no atiende a distinción de raza o nación; ya no hay perros
ni amos, judíos ni griegos, siervos ni libres, varones ni hembras.
Nacionalidad, condición social y sexo ya no determinan exclusión ni privilegio.
La buena noticia es que somos amados por Dios. Tenemos derecho de llegar
hasta él y como lo hizo esta mujer,
demostrarle cuán grande es nuestra fe sin importar cuál sea nuestra condición
para que Dios pueda decir: hombre, mujer ¡qué grande es tu fe!

Gracias por ser un Dios para todos y todas, para toda
tu creación. Quédate siempre con nosotros y anímanos en nuestro camino. Amén.
