WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

JOHN 6:1-15

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish.

But what are they among so many people?”

John 6:9 NRSV

Five loaves and two fish.  Is it a lot?  Is it a little?  From the perspective of the disciples it is a crumb; for the boy, it was a treasure in his hands to be shared; for the crowd, it was a lunch more than sufficient, the fruit of generosity.

Some interpretations of this text encourage people to feel forced to give the leftovers, without feeling much sense of solidarity.  It is actually a call to share the much or the little that we have in our hands. 

On the other hand, many times in our own communities we excuse ourselves for our laziness and selfishness by saying things like “we lack resources” or “we have no budget”.  How many times have we heard (or expressed) these litanies!  And then, we decide that we can’t do it and set the discussion aside. 

But the Gospel emphasizes that a force we might consider to be small, used with generosity and intelligence, can generate very big results. And, something that seems small to us, in Jesus’ hands and fulfilling God’s plan, can unleash processes and free energies that we never imagined. 

God encourages us to ask ourselves: “what do you have?”  Let us respond with the wisdom of the boy in this story.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to give all that I have without skimping.  Amen.

JUAN 6:1-15

Andrés dijo: Aquí hay un niño que tiene cinco panes de cebada

y dos pescados; pero ¿Qué es esto para tanta gente?

Juan 6:9

Cinco panes y dos peces ¿Es mucho? ¿Es poco? Desde la perspectiva de los discípulos es una migaja; para el niño fue un tesoro en sus manos a ser compartido, para la multitud fue un almuerzo más que suficiente, fruto de la generosidad.

Algunas interpretaciones de este texto animan a las personas a ser miserables y dar las sobras, sin por eso dejar de sentirse muy solidarias. Más bien se trata de un llamado a compartir lo mucho o lo poco que tenemos en nuestras manos.

Por otro lado, muchas veces en nuestras propias comunidades solemos excusarnos de nuestra pereza y egoísmo manifestando cosas como: “Faltan recursos” o “No hay presupuesto” ¡Cuántas veces hemos escuchado (o expresado) esas letanías! Y ya, decidimos que no se puede y archivamos el tema.

Pero el evangelio nos recalca que una fuerza que nosotros consideramos muy pequeña, usada con generosidad e inteligencia, puede generar resultados muy grandes. Y que incluso algo que nos parece poco, en las manos de Jesús y cumpliendo el plan de Dios, puede desatar procesos y liberar energías que ni nos imaginamos.

Dios nos anima a preguntarnos “¿qué tienes tú?”, respondamos con la misma sabiduría que el niño de esta historia.
