BY THEIR FRUITS YOU WILL KNOW THEM

GALATIANS 5:19-25

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,

patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

There is no law against such things. (NRSV) 

Galatians 5: 22- 23

When we approach the epistles, we find a diversity of topics that deal with the specific needs and situations of each community; but in each one it’s easy to detect a common denominator, the work of the Spirit and the call of each writer to stand firm by ensuring that God’s Spirit reigns in each difficult circumstance.

The believers in Galatia had testified to their joy and fervor in the faith. Coming from pagan cultures and practices, they were afire with enthusiasm for the Christian faith that Paul had presented to them. After a while, there were signs of cooling and consequent doctrinal problems. Hence the need for the apostle to resort to harsh expressions to make them think and reclaim the way they had disdained.  He urges them to return to God and, as Revelation says, “to not forget their first love.” Against those Judaizers, who tried to perpetuate practices which had been superseded in Christ and who intended to show that it was under the law of Moses and not the Grace of God that we should walk, Paul dedicates these words. They leave us no other way but to love, to serve, and to follow in the footsteps of the Master.

The Spirit of God, the only true one who ought to reign in every community and in our hearts, must be the same. There is no doubt that there can be no law against love, humility, patience, and kindness other than the same love that comes from God who in his infinite Grace gives it to us for our salvation. God loves us just as we are; let’s reciprocate by returning love.

Prayer: Lord, never let us mistake the true way. Guide us with your love. Amen.

GÁLATAS 5:19-25

Pero el fruto del Espíritu es amor, gozo, paz, paciencia,

benignidad, bondad, fe, mansedumbre, templanza,

contra tales cosas no hay ley. 

Gálatas 5: 22- 23

Cuando abordamos las epístolas, encontramos diversidad de temas que son tratados desde las necesidades propias y situaciones particulares de cada comunidad; pero en cada una es fácil detectar como común denominador la labor del Espíritu y el llamado de quien escribe, a mantenerse firmes procurando que el Espíritu de Dios reine en cada difícil circunstancia.

Los creyentes de Galacia habían dado testimonio de su gozo y fervor en la fe. Venidos de culturas y prácticas paganas, abrasaron con entusiasmo la fe cristiana que el apóstol Pablo les presentara. Pasado un tiempo se apreciaron vestigios de enfriamiento y los consiguientes problemas doctrinales. De ahí la necesidad de que el apóstol les dedicara duras expresiones que les hicieran pensar y retomar el camino desdeñado.

Los insta a volverse a Dios y como refiere Apocalipsis “…no olvidar el primer amor”. Contra aquellos judaizantes que trataban de perpetuar prácticas que en Cristo habían sido superadas y pretendían hacer ver que era bajo la ley de Moisés y no bajo la Gracias de Dios que debíamos andar, a esos y a los que se dejaban engañar, Pablo dedica estas palabras que no nos dejan otro camino que amar, servir y seguir las pisadas del Maestro.

El Espíritu de Dios, el único y verdadero que debe reinar en cada comunidad y en nuestros corazones, ha de ser el mismo. No cabe dudas que, contra el amor, contra la mansedumbre, la paciencia y la benignidad no puede haber otra ley que no sea la del mismo amor que viene del Dios que en su Gracia infinita se nos da para salvación nuestra. Dios nos ama tal cual somos, seamos recíprocos devolviendo amor.

Oración: Señor, permite que nunca equivoquemos el verdadero camino. Guíanos con tu amor. Amén.
