AN ACT OF NOBILITY
PSALM 131
Lord, my heart isn’t proud; my eyes aren’t conceited.
I don’t get involved with things too great or wonderful for me.
Psalm 131:1 CEB

I am telling you a story that should not fall into oblivion and as much as possible, should serve as inspiration and an example of human nobility.  It is about the famous tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras.  Even those who have never visited Spain know the rivalry between the Catalans and the Madrileños, and that the former group are fighting for their autonomy in a Spain dominated by Madrid. Even in soccer, the biggest rivals are Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Plácido Domingo is from Madrid and José Carreras is Catalán. In the political sphere, in 1984, Carrerras and Domingo became enemies. Popular in all parts of the world, both tenors had a clause in their contracts that they would only appear at a specific event to which their adversary was not invited.

But, in 1987, Carreras met a much more formidable enemy: leukemia. His fight against cancer was full of persistent suffering. He underwent various treatments that obligated him to travel to the United States once a month. Under these conditions he could not work, and even though he had a reasonable fortune, the high costs of the trips and the treatments rapidly exhausted his finances. Then he learned of a foundation in Madrid whose only goal was to support the treatment of leukemia patients. José Carreras tried to join the foundation, but reading the rules, he discovered that the founder, major collaborator and president of the foundation was Plácido Domingo! He had created the foundation principally to care for him and had maintained anonymity so as not to humiliate him by having to accept help from his enemy.

The most beautiful and moving encounter happened at one of Plácido’s performances in Madrid. There, Carreras surprised him by interrupting the event, and humbly kneeling at his feet. He asked his forgiveness and publicly thanked him. Plácido lifted him up and with a big hug, the two sealed in an instant the beginning of a great friendship. In an interview with Plácido Domingo, a journalist asked him why he had created the Beautiful Foundation in a time that, not only benefitted an “enemy,” but had also revived the only musician who could compete with him. His response was short and definitive: “Because a voice like this should not be lost.”

Prayer:  Lord, I give you thanks because, though evil grows every day in the world, you preserve capable hearts to perform noble acts every day. Amen.

UN ACTO DE NOBLEZA
SALMO 131
