2 SAMUEL 15:13-22

But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives,

and as my lord the king lives,

wherever my lord the king may be,

whether it mean life or death,

there will your servant be.”   (NIV)

2 Samuel 15:21

It’s easy to follow the leader if he’s taking the safe and sure path; but when the leader ventures out upon dangerous terrain, the followers desert. Such was not the case with followers like Ittai. He joined the forces of King David without knowing that Absalom was conspiring to overthrow him, and that David and his army would find themselves in great danger.  David made it clear to Ittai that, given that he’d just arrived, he was not obligated to involve himself. But Ittai didn’t want to desert; his commitment was exemplary.

In John 12: 26 Jesus said, “Whomever serves me must follow me; and where I am my servant also will be.” [NIV] Jesus spoke those words knowing that the cross was awaiting him in the future. At times Jesus leads us into situations in which we need to make great sacrifices without anyone thanking us for the service rendered. When this happens, don’t we feel tempted to abandon our discipleship?  It’s then when we should remember Ittai, whose commitment to his leader never faltered. He followed David faithfully, despite the difficulties of the journey. Discipleship is always being disposed to follow Christ. Today especially, we remember the men and women who accepted God’s call with faithfulness, to follow and serve him in distant lands.  

Prayer:  Our savior and leader, thank you for your fidelity which gives us trust. You are our loving guide. Give us courage to follow you wherever you guide us. Thank you for the men and women missionaries who remained faithful and shared the Gospel on our Cuban soil. Amen.

Es fácil seguir al líder si se va por la senda fácil y segura. Pero cuando el líder se aventura por terrenos peligrosos, los seguidores se apartan. No pasa así con seguidores como Itai. Él se unió a las fuerzas del Rey David sin saber que Absalón conspiraba para derrotarlo, y que David y su ejército se verían en gran peligro. David le aclaró a Itai que, puesto que acababa de llegar, no estaba obligado a involucrarse. Pero Itai no quiso desertar. Su compromiso fue ejemplar.

Jesús dijo en Juan 12:26: Si alguno me sirve, sígame. Y donde yo esté, también estará mi servidor.  Jesús habló estas palabras sabiendo que la cruz le aguardaba más adelante. A veces Jesús nos conduce a situaciones en las que tenemos que hacer grandes sacrificios sin que nadie nos agradezca el servicio prestado. Cuando eso sucede ¿nos sentimos tentados a dejar nuestro discipulado? En esos momentos debemos recordar a Itai, cuyo compromiso con su líder jamás decayó. Él siguió a David fielmente, a pesar de las dificultades del camino. El discipulado es estar siempre dispuesto a seguir a Cristo. Hoy especialmente recordamos a hombres y mujeres, que, con fidelidad, aceptaron el llamado de Dios para seguirle y servirle en tierras lejanas.

Oración: Nuestro salvador y líder, gracias por tu fidelidad que nos da confianza. Eres guía amoroso. Danos valor para seguirte doquier nos guíes. Gracias por los misioneros y misioneras que se mantuvieron fieles y compartieron tu evangelio en nuestra tierra cubana. Amén.
