THE LAW, WHICH LAW?

MatTHEW 22:34-40

All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.

If Jesus arrived in our world today, what would surprise him?  He would find that in our human relations exaggerated interests abound that crush the integrity of people, affecting especially the most vulnerable ones; it would scare him to see how few families govern and determine life for the clear majority of the world’s population.

In the Old Testament we find hundreds of laws that regulate the life of the Israelite people, directed to protect the outsiders, the widows, the orphans, the workers; laws that were converted into chains that bound especially impoverished people.  But the gospel shows us other ways to relate. Jesus’ summary includes all of the law in one word:  LOVE. Two loves—love the Father, whom we should love with all our heart, soul and being; and the second is similar to the first—love your neighbor as yourself.  The key word is similar.  If God the Father created us in his image, we are similar to Him, we must therefore love the way He loved, loving the other as much as He does; loving in the way that he sent his Son for salvation and freedom.  This is the true law that should rule the world, the law of love that gives in the same way that God gave to us in the person of Jesus. 

Prayer:  God of Life, One and Three, who endeavors to find us and to love us until the end of time, fill us with your love to love as you love.  Amen.

De estos dos mandamientos dependen toda la Ley y los Profetas

Si Jesús se llegara a nuestro mundo de hoy ¿cuál sería su sorpresa? Encontraría que en nuestras relaciones humanas abundan los intereses exagerados que aplastan la integridad de las personas, afectando sobre todo a las más vulnerables; se asustaría mucho al ver como unas pocas familias gobiernan y determinan la vida de la inmensa mayoría de la población mundial.

En el Antiguo Testamento nos encontramos cientos de leyes que regulaban la vida del pueblo israelita, encaminadas a proteger a los forasteros, las viudas, los huérfanos, los obreros; leyes que se fueron convirtiendo en cadenas que ataban sobre todo a las personas empobrecidas. Pero el evangelio nos muestra otras relaciones, Jesús resume, valida toda la ley, en una palabra: AMOR. Dos amores, al Padre, que debemos amar con todo el corazón, el alma, el ser; y el segundo es semejante al primero, amar al prójimo como a uno mismo. La palabra clave es semejante. Si Dios Padre nos creó a su imagen, somos semejantes a Él, tenemos por lo tanto que amar como Él amó, amar al otro y a la otra, tanto como lo hace Él; amar de tal manera que entregó a su hijo para la salvación y la liberación. Esa es la verdadera ley que debe regir en el mundo, la ley de un amor que nos permita entregarnos, así como Dios se entregó a sí mismo en la persona de Jesús. 

Oración: Dios de la Vida, Uno y Trino, que te empeñas en salir a nuestro encuentro y amarnos hasta las últimas consecuencias, llénanos de tu amor para amar como tú amas. Amén.
