There are many
biblical texts that speak to us about prayer. Prayer is the key that opens the
doors to a living and real relationship with God. The World Day of Prayer is a
beautiful time in which differences of language, culture, or nationality do not
matter because 170 countries are united in intercessory prayer.
This event, which
is observed the first Friday of each year, began as a joint action of women who
gathered in various places to pray for mission work. It was in this way that
annual days and weeks of prayer began to be celebrated. These initiatives
emerged in the 19th century, but they didn’t have the eminently
ecumenical character that they have today. In 1927 there went out a general
call for prayer from which the World Day of Prayer derived, organized and
encouraged by an International Committee of Women.
With the
celebration of this day the conviction of the power of prayer is expressed, and
the power that is felt when believers in different places, in different
languages intercede for works of benefit to humankind. It shows the importance
of prayer, of the unity among Christians, the value of intercession for the
strengthening of our faith and the growth of our spirituality.
Let us join the
Committee that in our locale calls for worldwide prayer.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us prayer which allows us to
feel that even without knowing each other, we can pray with sisters and
brothers of other nations. Thank you for teaching us to intercede for justice
and for love. Amen.

Muchos son los textos
bíblicos que nos hablan de la oración. La oración es la llave que nos abre las
puertas a una relación viva y real con Dios. El Día Mundial de Oración es una
hermosa jornada en que no importan las diferencias de idiomas, culturas o
naciones, para que 170 países se unan en una plegaria intercesora.
Este evento, que se
celebra el primer viernes de cada año, comenzó como una acción comunitaria de
mujeres que en algunos lugares se reunían para orar por la obra misionera.
Así comenzaron a celebrarse
días y semanas anuales de oración. Estas iniciativas surgieron desde el siglo
XIX; pero no tenían todavía el carácter eminentemente ecuménico que tienen hoy.
En 1927 se hizo un
llamado general para la oración, lo cual derivó en el Día Mundial de Oración,
organizado y estimulado por un Comité internacional de mujeres.
Con la celebración de
este día se expresa el convencimiento del poder de la oración y en particular, la
fuerza que alcanza cuando creyentes de distintos lugares, en diferentes lenguas
interceden por obras de beneficio para la humanidad. Muestra la importancia de
la oración, de la unidad entre cristianos, del valor de la intercesión para el
fortalecimiento de nuestra fe y el crecimiento de nuestra espiritualidad.
Unámonos al Comité que,
en nuestra localidad, convoca a la oración mundial.
Oración: Señor, gracias por darnos la oración, porque ella
nos permite sentir que, aún sin conocernos podemos orar con hermanas y hermanos
de otras naciones. Gracias por enseñarnos a interceder por la justicia y el
amor. Amén.
