LIVING WITHOUT PREJUDICES

JOHN 7:40-52

Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

“How can the Messiah come from Galilee?”  (NIV)

We live in a time in which everything is measured by successes and failures. Almost no one feels proud to belong to a group that constantly loses and seldom wins. It nearly always happens that the supporters cheer at successes and leave when there are losses.

Similarly, a person is considered successful when he has triumphed economically. Thus, our achievements are measured in our society by that which leads people to boast of themselves.

If Jesus had been a protagonist in our times, he assuredly would not have been considered a successful man; neither was he considered a successful man in his own epoch. Many didn’t even believe that he could have been the Messiah, saying that nothing good could come from Galilee.

Jesus himself is a victim of prejudice from the viewpoint of power, and by those who believe themselves much wiser. But just as the cross defeated death through the resurrection, if well read and understood, his life story and the Gospels shatter the prejudices that classify successes and failures according to their religious, ethnic, regional, generational, economic and gender background.

Prayer:  Jesus, help us Christians to understand that we shouldn’t prejudge anyone, principally considering that you yourself were a victim of prejudices. Amen.

Vivimos en un tiempo en el cual todo se mide con éxitos y fracasos. Casi nadie se siente orgulloso de pertenecer a un equipo que pierde constantemente y gana poco. Casi siempre ocurre que los simpatizantes se alegran con el éxito y se alejan con el fracaso.

Así también se considera una persona exitosa aquella que ha triunfado económicamente. De este modo se miden los logros en nuestra sociedad, lo que lleva a las personas a enorgullecerse de sí mismas.

Si Jesús hubiera sido protagonista de nuestro tiempo, con seguridad no sería considerado un hombre exitoso, como tampoco fue considerado un hombre exitoso en su época. Muchos ni siquiera creían que Él pudiera ser el Mesías, diciendo que no podía venir nada bueno de Galilea.

Jesús mismo es víctima del prejuicio construido desde el poder y desde los que creían ser más sabios. Pero, así como la cruz rompió con la muerte a través de la resurrección, su historia de vida y el evangelio bien leído y entendido, hace añicos los prejuicios que encasillan a exitosos y fracasados según su procedencia religiosa, étnica, regional, generacional, económica, de género…

Oración: Jesús, ayúdanos a entender que nosotros los cristianos no debemos prejuzgar a nadie, principalmente teniendo en cuenta que tú mismo fuiste víctima de los prejuicios. Amén.
