“WHY DOESN’T GOD DO ANYTHING ABOUT SO MUCH EVIL?”
HABAKKUK 3:16-19
I will rejoice in the
Lord.
I will rejoice in the
God of my deliverance.
Habakkuk 3:18 (CEB)
Why doesn’t God do anything about so much
evil? We have heard this question on many
occasions. And sometimes we have also
had this thought ourselves. The prophet
Habakkuk also had this thought and honestly confronted God.
In chapter 1 he asks: How long, why? Habakkuk was a faithful believer, but he felt
anxious about the excessive violence, evil, corruption, destruction and
injustice he saw where the people of Israel lived, the people chosen by
God. Why did “the evil ones” prevail
over the just ones? He could not
understand. He was desperate; yet still he did not lose his faith. And the Lord gave him an answer: he showed
him that he was going to succeed. Things
would not be how and when Habakkuk thought they should be. The plans of God were not his plans, but
there would be justice. The two first
chapters describe what happened. Reading
them will better prepare us to appreciate all the beauty of the prophet’s faith
and his absolute trust in God.
Chapter 3 is a prayer in which there is recognition
of the protective performance of God for his people. The end is a precious message, both for its poetry
and for what it expresses. “Although the
fig tree gives no fruit, although….” everything is lacking and there is nothing
to eat, although all seems terrible in my life and all around me, “with
everything I have I will be happy in the Lord and I will rejoice in the God of
my salvation”.
The lesson of Habakkuk leaves us with this
message: God always has an answer
waiting, he is not silent or indifferent.
The solutions depend on God’s plan, not on our desires. Like Habakkuk, we trust in our Lord, in his
wise and loving promises.
Prayer: Thank you, our just God, for giving us the
grace of faith. Keep us from losing it amid
our worries and permit us to feel the happiness that comes with trusting in
you. Amen.

“¿Por qué no actúa Dios ante tanta maldad?”
Habacuc
3:16-19
Con
todo, yo me alegraré en Jehová,
y
me gozaré en el Dios de mi salvación.

¿Por qué
Dios no actúa ante tanta maldad? Esta pregunta la hemos escuchado en repetidas
ocasiones. Y alguna vez también nosotros hemos tenido este pensamiento. El
profeta Habacuc también lo hizo y se enfrentó honestamente a Dios. En el
capítulo 1 pregunta: ¿Hasta cuándo, por qué? Habacuc era un creyente fiel, pero
se sentía angustiado por la excesiva violencia, maldad, corrupción, destrucción
e injusticia en las que vivía el pueblo de Israel, el pueblo elegido por Dios.
¿Por qué “los malos” prevalecían sobre los justos? El no entendía, estaba
desesperado; sin embargo, no perdió su fe. Y el Señor le dio una respuesta, le
mostró lo que iba a suceder. No se harían las cosas como y cuando las pensaba
Habacuc. Los planes de Dios eran otros, pero se haría justicia. Los dos
primeros capítulos describen lo que sucedería. Leerlos nos prepararía mejor
para apreciar en toda su belleza, la fe, la confianza absoluta del profeta en
su Dios. El capítulo 3 es una oración en la cual hay un reconocimiento de la
actuación protectora de Dios para con su pueblo. El final es un precioso
mensaje, por su poesía y por lo que expresa. “Aunque la higuera no dé frutos,
aunque…” falte todo y no haya que comer, aunque todo parezca terrible en mi
vida y a mi alrededor, “con todo yo me alegraré en Jehová y me gozaré en el
Dios de mi salvación.”
La
lectura de Habacuc nos deja este mensaje: Dios siempre tiene una respuesta esperanzadora,
no está callado o indiferente. Las soluciones dependen de un plan, no de
nuestros deseos. Como Habacuc, confiemos en nuestro Señor, en sus sabias y
amorosas promesas.
Oración:
Gracias, Dios justo, por darnos la gracia de la fe. Haz que no la perdamos en medio de nuestras
preocupaciones y permítenos sentir la alegría que nos da la confianza en ti. Amén
