FIGHTING FOR THE CHURCH

ACTS 5:12-16

So the churches were strengthened in the faith

Today’s texts permit us to reaffirm the great role played by the Christian church since its origins. Especially on this day in which we celebrate the anniversary of the National Union of Presbyterian Women, we stress the work developed by them in our communities of faith and in our society.

But if the church of the New Testament had been perfect there wouldn’t have been the necessity of writing letters, whose objective was the correction of its defects. The existence of the epistles is in itself clear evidence of the limitations and the errors of the communities to whom they were directed.

For example: in the Corinthian church we can distinguish situations of conflict such as divisions (first Corinthians 1:10), idolatries, as well as doctrinal confusions (first Corinthians 10:7–22). Many of us ask if we have fallen in some of these same errors. But the Lord has promised not only to work in his church now, but also to perfect it and one day to complete that work. We should take inspiration from those texts and fight against any deformation of the church now, working constantly to reform it. Let us always remember that we are “the reformed church always reforming itself.”

Prayer:  Lord, make us open of mind, humble of heart and simple in daily life. Let us recognize our errors so that we can correct them, and to thus be a community that renews itself every day with your Spirit’s guidance. Amen.

LUCHANDO POR LA IGLESIA

Así que las iglesias eran confirmadas en la fe,

y aumentaban en número cada día.

Hechos 16:5

Los textos de hoy nos permiten reafirmar el gran papel jugado por la Iglesia cristiana desde sus orígenes. Especialmente en este día en el que celebramos el aniversario de la Unión Nacional de Mujeres Presbiterianas, destacamos el trabajo desarrollado por ellas en nuestras comunidades de fe y en nuestra sociedad.

Pero si la iglesia del Nuevo Testamento hubiera sido perfecta no hubiese habido la necesidad de escribir cartas que tenían por objeto corregir sus defectos. La existencia de las epístolas es en sí misma una clara evidencia de las limitaciones y los errores de las comunidades a las que iban dirigidas.

Por ejemplo: en la iglesia de Corinto podemos distinguir situaciones de conflicto tales como divisiones (1 Corintios 1:10), idolatrías, así como confusiones doctrinales (1 Corintios 10:7-22).

Muchos nos preguntamos si hemos caído en alguno de estos errores. Pero el Señor ha prometido no solamente obrar en su Iglesia ahora, sino perfeccionar y terminar un día esa obra. Debemos inspirarnos en estos textos y luchar contra cualquier deformación de la Iglesia ahora, trabajando constantemente para reformarla. Recordemos siempre que somos “Iglesia Reformada siempre reformándose”.

Oración: Señor, haznos abiertos de mente, humildes de corazón y sencillos en la vida cotidiana. Permítenos reconocer nuestros errores para corregirlos y así ser comunidad que se renueva cada día con la guía de tu Espíritu. Amén.
