A READING IN THE LANGUAGES OF LOVE

1 JOHN 4:7-12

but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

Romans 7:23 (NRSV)

The cross has come to be the universal symbol of God’s love. In the crucifiction of Jesus, God spoke clearly in each of the five languages of love:

Þ         From the cross, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) What words of affirmation could speak more deeply of love?

Þ         In his death, Jesus performed his greatest act of service in reconciling sinful humanity with the holy God.

Þ         He gave gifts of inestimable value: pardon of sins and life eternal (Romans 6:23)

Þ         His gifts provided the opportunity for humans to have an intimate relationship with God, spending quality time with the Creator, both in the present and forever.

Þ         It was in the cross that God touched humanity in our place of deepest need and said, “I love you.” Here Jesus fulfilled his promise: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

When we respond to God’s love and begin to identify the various languages that he uses to speak with us, we can also learn to speak those languages.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the sacrifice of your Son Jesus, so that we could have eternal life. Give us the wisdom to speak about the truth of Jesus’ sacrifice in a memorable way for the people with whom we are in a relationship. Amen.

La cruz ha llegado a ser el símbolo universal del amor de Dios. En la crucifixión de Jesús, Dios habló claramente en cada uno de los cinco lenguajes del amor:

Þ Desde la cruz, Jesús dijo: Padre, perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen (Lucas 23:34) ¿Qué palabras de afirmación podrían hablar más profundamente del amor?

Þ En su muerte, Jesús llevó a cabo su mayor acto de servicio al reconciliar a la humanidad pecadora con el Dios santo.

Þ Hizo regalos de inestimable valor: el perdón de pecados y la vida eterna (Romanos 6:23)

Þ Sus regalos brindaron la oportunidad al ser humano de tener una relación íntima con Dios al pasar tiempo de calidad con el Creador, tanto en el presente como para siempre.

Þ Fue en la cruz donde Dios tocó al ser humano en nuestro punto de necesidad más profundo y dijo: Te amo. Aquí Jesús cumplió su promesa: Yo soy el buen pastor; el buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas (Juan 10:11)

Cuando respondemos al amor de Dios y comenzamos a identificar los diversos lenguajes que Él usa para hablarnos, nosotros también aprendemos a hablar esos lenguajes.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por el sacrificio de tu Hijo Jesús para que tuviésemos vida eterna. Danos sabiduría para testificar sobre la verdad del sacrificio de Jesús de una manera memorable para las personas con las que me relaciono. Amén.
