BEING WELCOMING
2 KINGS 8-16
Let us make a small
roof chamber with walls,
and put there for
him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp,
so that he can stay
there whenever he comes to us.".
2 Kings 4:10 (NRSV)
The story
of the Shunammite woman and the prophet Elisha is a splendid example of
hospitality and of welcome. Concerning the Shunammite we can note that she took
the initiative for hospitality without knowing well the person who would
receive it, it was her sensitivity that opened the doors of her house. This
woman took the time to learn to recognize in Elijah the presence of a holy man
of God; she took the trouble to realize more deeply whom she was receiving.
Finally, this selfless act was crowned with the fulfillment of her most
cherished dream, to have a son.
Today, we
live in a world where distrust and selfishness prevail over hospitality and
mercy. However, this reading reminds us that it is worth the trouble to be
spontaneous in our vocation of service and care, and moreover to go further
sufficiently to promote relationships that are deep and not superficial.
Let’s open
ourselves to the many needs for hospitality that surround us daily. In addition
to those who need a roof or the most basic foodstuffs, we also need to be aware
of those who want to be heard or helped to deal with different situations of
injustice, misunderstanding, intolerance, violence . . .
Let us
allow God to guide us to meet and welcome those who need it so much. Let us be
as grateful as Elisha who responded with a beautiful gesture to the love that
opened before him. Thus, surely what seems impossible will come true, and no
stumbling block will be able to remove hope from our lives.
Prayer: Good and gracious God, may we be submissive creatures in
your hands to show your love through concrete actions. Amen.

Ser acogedores
2 Reyes 8-16
Debiéramos hacerle un pequeño aposento en la azotea, y
poner allí una cama y una mesa, y una silla y un candelero, para que cuando
pase por aquí pueda quedarse con nosotros.
2 Reyes 4:10
La historia de la
sunamita y el profeta Eliseo es un magnífico ejemplo de hospitalidad y de
agradecimiento. Sobre la actitud de la sunamita notemos: que tuvo la iniciativa
de la hospitalidad sin saber muy bien a quién recibía, fue su sensibilidad
quien abrió las puertas de su hogar. Esta mujer, pasado un tiempo supo reconocer
en Eliseo un santo varón de Dios, es decir, estuvo atenta para conocer más
profundamente a quien recibía. Por último, su gesto desinteresado estuvo
coronado por la satisfacción de su más anhelado sueño: tener un hijo.
Hoy vivimos en un mundo
donde la desconfianza y el egoísmo imperan sobre la hospitalidad y la
misericordia. Sin embargo, esta lectura nos recuerda que vale la pena ser
espontáneos en nuestra vocación al servicio y el cuidado, y, además,
profundizar suficientemente y promover así relaciones profundas y no
superficiales.
Abrámonos a las tantas
necesidades de acogida que hoy nos rodean. Además de aquellos o aquellas que
necesitan de un techo y el alimento más elemental, también a quienes les urge
ser escuchados y asistidos bajo múltiples situaciones de injusticia,
incomprensión, intolerancia, violencia…
Dejemos que Dios nos
guíe para atender y acoger a quienes tanto lo necesitan. Seamos agradecidos
como Eliseo, que respondió con un hermoso gesto al amor que se abría ante él.
Así, seguramente, lo que parece imposible será cierto, y ningún tropiezo
quitará la esperanza de nuestras vidas.
Oración: Dios bueno, que seamos dóciles criaturas en tus
manos para expresar tu amor a través de gestos concretos. Amén.
