MAKING GOOD USE OF OUR DAYS

JOSHUA 10:1-14

Teach us to number our days,

That we may gain a heart of wisdom

Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

How long is a day? The seven days of creation are generally interpreted as seven periods of thousands or millions of years. The Psalmist says: a thousand years in your sight is like one of the watches of the night. In 2 Peter 3:8 we read that:  With the Lord, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day.

Many times the Bible speaks of 40 days, referring not to 40 periods of 24 hours, but to a period of time that is longer or shorter: the time of the flood on the earth, the time of Moses on Mount Sinai, the deadline for the destruction of Nineveh, the time Jesus was tempted in the desert.

This is what we must remember when we count our days and measure our time. What do we fill our days with? How do we spend our time? Do we make good use of our days? Do our work plans jibe with the demands of God’s plan? Do we do things that are part of his plan for the world? Do we do things that promote peace and justice? Do we do things for the well-being of others?

Prayer: Lord, give me the wisdom to make wise use of my time. In Jesus’ name, amen.

HACER BUEN USO DE NUESTROS DÍAS

JOSUÉ 10:1-14

Enséñanos a contar bien nuestros días,

para que nuestra mente alcance sabiduría

Salmo 90:12

¿Cuánto tiempo dura un día? Los siete días de la creación generalmente se interpretan como siete periodos de miles, millones de años. El salmista dice que: mil años delante de tus ojos son como una de las vigilias de la noche. En la segunda carta de Pedro, en el capítulo tres, el verso ocho podemos leer que:  para el Señor, un día es como mil años, y mil años como un día.

Muchas veces en la Biblia se habla de cuarenta días, refiriéndose no a cuarenta períodos de veinticuatro horas, sino a un período de tiempo más o menos largo: el tiempo de la lluvia sobre la tierra cuando el diluvio, el tiempo de Moisés en el Monte Sinaí, el plazo dado para la destrucción de Nínive, el tiempo de Jesús en el desierto cuando las tentaciones.

Esto es lo que tenemos que pensar cuando vamos a contar nuestros días y medir nuestro tiempo. ¿Con qué llenamos nuestros días? ¿En qué invertimos nuestro tiempo? ¿Hacemos buen uso de nuestros días? ¿Nuestros planes de trabajo se ajustan a las demandas del plan de Dios? ¿Hacemos aquellas cosas que son parte de su plan para el mundo? ¿Hacemos aquellas cosas que promueven la paz y la justicia? ¿Hacemos aquellas cosas que tienen que ver con el bienestar de otros?

Oración: Dame Dios, sabiduría para hacer un buen uso de mi tiempo. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.
