THE REVELATION OF GOD

ISAIAH 40:1-10

Go up on a high mountain, messenger Zion!  Raise your voice and shout, messenger Jerusalem!  Raise it, don’t be afraid….

Many years ago, a bell was crafted for the Church of San Francisco de Sales in Cincinnati.  The church already had a bell, but the congregation wanted one of the biggest bells in the world.  When the project was finished, the bell measured 7 feet tall, 9 feet in diameter, and weighed almost 20 tons.  It cost about $12,000.00.  In January 1895 its peal was heard like thunder for 15 miles, causing damage to the closest buildings and shattering windows in the whole neighborhood.  It has never been rung again.  As a mute testimony to the vain pretensions of the congregation, the bell continues to hang at the top of the tower.  How many bells could have been made with that same material?  How many faithful would have responded to its ring?  It would be interesting to know. 

Often the Lord does not reveal himself to the world because we mistake our function.  Christ used fishermen to preach.  God’s Word was revealed in humble persons and he used very simple methods to show himself to the world.  With our simplicity we can be useful in God’s cause.  God does not need us to be the best preachers, nor the most able writers, nor the best singers.  Our humble word, our modest writing, or our muted voice all serve to offer to the world God’s holy revelation. 

Prayer:  Lord, we ask you to use us so that we reveal you to the world.  Amen.

Hace muchísimos años se fundió una campana para la iglesia de San Francisco de Sales en Cincinnati. La Iglesia tenía campana antes, pero la congregación quería poseer una de las campanas más grandes del mundo. Al concluir la obra, la campana medía siete pies de altura, nueve pies de diámetro y pesaba casi veinte toneladas. Su costo aproximado era de 12 000 dólares. En enero de 1895 se dejó escuchar la voz que se expandió como un trueno en quince millas a la redonda causando daños en los edificios más cercanos y no dejando ventanas sanas en toda la localidad. No ha sonado más. Como testigo mudo de las vanas pretensiones de la congregación, la campana sigue en lo alto de la torre. ¿Cuántas campanas se podían haber fundido con aquel material? ¿Cuántos fieles hubieran respondido a su llamado? Sería interesante saberlo.

Muchas veces el Señor no se revela al mundo porque nosotros adulteramos nuestra función. Cristo usó a pescadores para predicar. Su Palabra se reveló a personas muy humildes y utilizó medios muy simples para mostrarse al mundo. Con nuestra sencillez podemos ser útiles en su causa. Dios no necesita que seamos los mejores predicadores, ni los más hábiles escritores, ni los cantantes mejor cotizados. Nuestra humilde palabra, nuestra modesta pluma o nuestra apagada voz sirve para brindar al mundo su revelación santa.

Oración: Señor, te pedimos que nos uses tal como somos para revelarte al mundo. Amén.
