Monday, May 13 TO OUR CHILDREN DEUTERONOMY 6:1-9

TO OUR CHILDREN
DEUTERONOMY 6:1-9

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home
and when you walk along the road, when you lie down
And when you get up.   (NIV)
Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Much is said of the modern methods to awaken and develop children’s minds. Active pedagogy aims to do it while respecting the personality of each one, permitting them to affirm themselves and not imposing adult like ways of thinking and acting.

It’s certain that between attempting to prematurely treat children as adults, or to put everything at their level, with the risk of later having adult persons with infantile mentality, that there’s a place for a balanced education.  The true educators always practice it, attentive to being available and within reach of the children, but without compromising a firm and just authority. Parental relaxation of authority is probably the gravest danger for our society.

For believing parents to renounce the authority that God gives them by entrusting them with children is to contradict his Word.  If you love your sons and daughters, don’t you want to place them from their tenderest age under the influence of that Word, asking God to bless them?

We cannot convert our children; their faith should be a personal faith in Jesus Christ, who each one finds for himself; but our mission is to prepare them for such an encounter. Therefore, repeat the words of Scripture to them, trying to explain them; and don’t forget to put into practice his teachings by our own example.

Prayer: We pray, familial and present God, that we may be responsible in our homes. Amen.

Translation by John Walter

A NUESTROS HIJOS
DEUTERONOMIO 6:1-9
