THE HOLE OF ENVY
JAMES 2:9-11
Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but who can
stand before jealousy? (NIV)
Proverbs 27:4
Jealousy is a very damaging emotion that makes it hard
for us to recognize the times when that petty feeling tries to nest in our
lives. Nevertheless, when we see someone richer than ourselves, or possesses what
we lack, we almost always become dissatisfied. But there’s a single truth:
under God we are all equal. The Bible teaches us that everyone is created in
God’s image, that everyone is responsible for what they do with what He has
given them, and that someday death will come to all. Therefore, we realize that
there is equality only under Him. Outside Him we see many unjust things in
life.
We Christians have a great responsibility and the great
challenge of seeing things in their just perspective. All of us, whether it be
in some moment or constantly, have humbly recognized our limitations or errors
before God, and we have found forgiveness and reconciliation to begin anew. It’s
for that reason that we can stand together at his side. Those having an
advantageous economic position can rejoice upon discovering the emptiness of
material riches. Those who possess a life of scarcity can rejoice for having
discovered eternal riches. And according to James, this is the wisdom that
allows us to avoid the hole of envy.
Prayer: Do not permit the evil feeling of jealousy, that does so
much harm to us and to others, to abound in us, Lord. In Jesus, amen.

EL HOYO DE LA ENVIDIA
SANTIAGO 2:9-11
¿...quien podrá sostenerse delante de la
envidia?
Proverbios 27:4
La envidia es un sentimiento muy dañino. Eso hace
que nos cueste reconocer las veces en las que ese sentimiento mezquino intenta
anidar en nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, casi siempre cuando vemos a alguien que
tiene más riquezas que nosotros, o que posee cualidades de las que carecemos,
nos volvemos descontentos. Pero hay una sola verdad: bajo Dios todos somos
iguales. La Biblia nos enseña que todas las personas están creadas a imagen de
Dios, que todas son responsables por lo que hacen con aquello que Él les ha
dado, y que algún día todos llegarán a la muerte. Entonces nos damos cuenta de
que sólo bajo Él hay igualdad. Fuera de Él, vemos muchas cosas en la vida que
no son justas.
Nosotros, los cristianos tenemos la gran
responsabilidad y el gran desafío de ver las cosas en su justa perspectiva.
Todos, ya sea en algún momento o constantemente, hemos reconocido humildemente
ante Dios nuestras limitaciones o errores y hemos hallado el perdón y la
reconciliación para volver a empezar. Por eso todos podemos estar juntos de pie
a su lado. Aquellos que tienen una posición económica ventajosa, pueden
regocijarse al descubrir la vaciedad de las riquezas materiales. Los que poseen
una vida de carencias, pueden regocijarse de que han descubierto las riquezas
eternas. Y según Santiago, ésta es la sabiduría que nos capacita para evitar el
hoyo de la envidia.
Oración: No permitas que abunde en nosotros Señor, el mal
sentimiento de la envidia que tanto daño hace a nosotros y a los demás. Por
Jesús. Amén.
