OUR DAILY BREAD
EXODUS 16:1-5
Then the LORD said
to Moses,
“I am going to rain
bread from heaven for you. . .”
Exodus 16:4 (NRSV)
Since
ancient times, bread has been humanity’s great problem. Food has moved us to
previously unknown regions, has driven us to great discoveries, and has even
led to death in search of new ways. In the Bible, God is recognized as the
giver of food, even when with difficulty we extract it from the bowels of the
earth, and with the same certainty of those who saw it fall from heaven every
day as manna.
In the
passage which we read today Jesus uses this human need for bread as an
appropriate figure of what he means in each person’s life. He said, “I am the
bread of life . . .” Being fed by God is
a simple metaphor, but no less daring for its simplicity. This is the symbol of
the Jesus who is author of our lives and at the same time our sustainer. Being
fed by him is his way of uniting us to him, renewing us, restoring us to our
true nature.
Now, when
bread is scarce in our country, to proclaim Jesus as the bread of life acquires
a peculiar nuance charged with hope. So, when we don’t have bread to eat, there
is a bread to which we are indissolubly bound, the bread which feeds our life
and sustains it: Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Loving God, giver of all that I have, I ask today that you
supplement the lack of those who don’t have material bread and of those who
have no spiritual bread. Feed us from yourself. Amen.

EL PAN NUESTRO DE
CADA DÍA
ÉXODO 16:1-5
Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: He aquí yo
os haré llover pan del cielo…
Éxodo 16:4
Desde tiempos muy antiguos el
pan ha representado el gran problema del ser humano. El alimento lo ha movido a
regiones desconocidas, le ha impulsado a grandes descubrimientos, le ha llevado
incluso a la muerte en busca de nuevos caminos. En la Biblia, Dios es
reconocido como el dador de este alimento, aun cuando el ser humano lo saca con
trabajo de las entrañas de la tierra y con la misma certidumbre de aquellos que
lo veían caer día a día como maná.
En el pasaje que hemos leído,
Jesús utiliza esta necesidad humana del pan como una figura apropiada de lo que
Él significa para la vida de cada persona. Él dijo: Yo soy el pan de la vida…
Alimentarse de Dios es una sencilla metáfora que no por ello deja de ser menos atrevida. Este
el símbolo de un Jesús que es autor de nuestra vida y a la vez sustentador de
la misma. Esto de alimentarse de Él es su manera de unirnos a Él, renovándonos,
restaurándonos a nuestra verdadera naturaleza.
En este tiempo en el que en
nuestro país escasea el pan, proclamar a un Jesús como el pan de la vida
adquiere un matiz peculiar cargado de esperanza. Así no tengamos pan para
comer, existe un pan al que estamos ligados indisolublemente, es el pan que
alimenta nuestra vida y la sostiene: Jesucristo.
Oración: Dios amoroso, dador de todo cuanto tengo, en este día te
pido que suplas la carencia de aquellos a quienes falta pan material y a los
que no tienen pan espiritual. Aliméntanos de
ti. Amén.
