GOD USES OBEDIENCE

TO DEVELOP OUR FAITH

MATTHEW 14:22-31

Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him,

"You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

            Remember when Jesus called to Peter to set foot outside the boat and walk to him amid the water. This was a call to leave the security of the boat for the insecurity of walking on the water. Torn between obedience and fear, Peter took the first step, and then after hesitating, when Jesus reaches out his hand and his foot doesn’t sink in the water, his faith was reaffirmed. God uses obedience to put us in a place where we can develop faith. Jesus calls us to take the first step, and then only when we have taken that step will the next one be revealed. In this sense, it isn’t possible to develop faith without believing in Jesus. You may have an overloaded brain with which God can deal, but unless you take that first step, you will not exercise faith.

            However, here is where many of us get stuck. We doubt, and we take a step away from obedience to speculate on what we should do, when Jesus has already told us. There is no other path but obedience to develop faith.

            Only by leaving the security of the boat was Peter able to discover the greater security that is in Jesus. Truly, Jesus is the only security. Peter knows that firsthand – or perhaps, first step – that Jesus is Lord of all circumstances.

            The sages of today tell us that security is in the boat, but the reality is that the place of salvation is when we risk ourselves at Jesus’ side.

Prayer: My dear Jesus, teach me to hold your hand every day and to learn that true salvation is by your side. We pray in your holy name. Amen

DESARROLLAR NUESTRA FE

MATEO 14:22-31

Al momento Jesús, extendiendo la mano, asió de él, y le dijo:

¡Hombre de poca fe! ¿Por qué dudaste?

Recuerden cuando Jesús llama a Pedro a dar un paso fuera de la barca y caminar hacia él en medio de las aguas. Este fue un llamado para dejar la seguridad de la barca por la inseguridad de caminar sobre las aguas.  Entre obediente y temeroso, Pedro da el primer paso, y luego de titubear, cuando Jesús tiende su mano, ya su pie no se hunde en el agua, su fe se afirma. Dios usa la obediencia para ponernos en una posición donde nosotros podamos desarrollar fe.  Jesús nos llama a dar el primer paso, y entonces, solo después de que hemos dado ese paso, se revelará el próximo. En este sentido no se puede desarrollar fe sin creerle a Jesús. Tú puedes tener un hacinamiento mental con lo que Dios puede hacer, pero a menos que des el primer paso, no ejercitarás la fe.

Sin embargo, aquí es donde muchos de nosotros nos atascamos. Dudamos, y damos un paso atrás de la obediencia para especular sobre qué debemos hacer, cuando Jesús ya nos lo ha dicho. No hay otro camino que la obediencia para desarrollar la fe.

Solo salir de la seguridad de la barca, hace que Pedro descubra que la mayor seguridad está en Jesús. En verdad, la única seguridad es Jesús. Pedro lo sabe de primera mano – o tal vez de primer paso – que Jesús es Señor sobre todas las circunstancias.

Las filosofías de hoy nos dicen que la seguridad está en la barca, pero la realidad es que el lugar de salvación está cuando nos arriesgamos al lado de Jesús.

Oración: Mi buen Jesús, enséñame a asirme de tu mano cada día, y a aprender que la verdadera salvación está a tu lado. En tu santo nombre oramos, amén.
