THE DEMISE OF DEATH
1 CORINTHIANS 15:49-58
The sting of death is sin…(NIV)
1 Corinthians 15: 56a
It’s said that death made a pact with a man. The only condition set was that
death would oversee advising him in advance so that he was prepared. Many years
passed, and one day death appeared in search of the man. “But how?” the man replied.
“We agreed that you would let me know when you were coming.” “But didn’t I warn you?” the implacable
visitor said. “I have been warning you, not just once but many times, almost
every day. Haven’t you noticed that your sight was dimming little by little? Haven’t
you seen how your hair was becoming white? In this, and many other things I was
telling you that I was drawing nearer.”
This reflection does not intend to frighten when dealing with the matter
of death. Unfortunately, whenever there’s talk of God or things of the church,
a parallel is established between them and the final departure. We don’t live
to die; rather, we exist to live fully, and this is harder than dying.
The passage we read isn’t a call so that humans may be alert to death’s
arrival. Seeing it from another angle, it’s rather a call to take advantage of
our lives. How much you may have lived is unimportant, what counts is how much
good you’ve done, and how much time remains to repair what has been done badly.
The Pauline experience illustrates it for us: I am crucified with
Christ, and I do not live, but Christ lives in me. Our responsibility is
not only to be prepared to confront death, rather to live life with a spirit of
victory. Thus, one may kill death.
Prayer: God, teach me how to live my life in a
way that I may conquer death. Amen.

Ya que el aguijón de la muerte es el
pecado…
1 Corintios 15:56a
Cuentan que
la muerte hizo un trato con un hombre. La condición única puesta por éste, fue
que ella se encargaría de avisarle si llegaba con anticipación como para que él
estuviera preparado. Pasaron muchos años y un día la muerte se presentó a
buscar al hombre. “¿Pero, cómo?” replicó él. “Quedamos en que tú me avisarías
cundo vinieras” “¿Que no te he avisado?”
dijo implacable la visitante. “Te he estado avisando no una vez, sino muchas
veces y casi todos los días. ¿No has notado que la vista se te iba apagando
poco a poco? ¿No has visto cómo tu cabello se ha ido blanqueando? En esta y en
otras muchas cosas te estuve diciendo que me estaba acercando”. Esta reflexión
no pretende atemorizar al tratar el tema de la muerte. Lamentablemente siempre
que se habla de Dios o de las cosas de la Iglesia se establece un paralelo
entre éstas y la partida final. No vivimos para morir, sino vivimos para vivir
a plenitud; y esto es más difícil que morir.
El pasaje que leímos no es una alerta para el ser
humano para que esté pendiente de la llegada de la muerte. Viéndolo desde otro
ángulo es más bien un llamado a que aprovechemos nuestra vida. Nada importa cuánto
hayas vivido, sino cuanto bien has hecho y qué tiempo te queda para reparar lo
mal hecho. La experiencia paulina nos ilustra: Con Cristo estoy juntamente
crucificado, y yo no vivo yo, más vive Cristo en mí…
Nuestra responsabilidad no es sólo estar preparado
para enfrentar la muerte, sino para vivir la vida con un espíritu de victoria.
Así se puede matar la muerte.
Oración: Dios, enséñame
cómo vivir mi vida de modo que pueda vencer a la muerte. Amén.
