WHAT GOD EXPECTS OF ME

GENESIS 39:6-23

How then could I do such wicked thing and sin against God?

Genesis 39:9b (NIV)

God invites us to distinguish between good and evil, and to choose what is right.  It seems these days that it is difficult for us to choose what is right.  But God speaks to all human beings.

Paul describes the evil that existed in the first century: They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness… (Romans 2:15)

Today “Everyone does it” is a justification that is used in our daily communication, even if it is cheating on your taxes or on a spouse or telling lies.  We try to rationalize, justifying incorrect choices.  

In the Old Testament text for today, Potiphar’s wife hoped that Joseph would decide that the best choice was her invitation to sin.  She was in a position of authority and he was only a slave.  Joseph answered her with the following question:  How could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?  This decision landed him in prison. 

The criterion that we should use is not what I want, nor what is safe, nor what society teaches, nor what the majority does; the only correct criterion is that which comes from the Word of God.  

Prayer: Lord, help us to live our lives in accordance with your will and free us when the cords of corruption and injustice threaten to bind us.  Amen.

LO QUE DIOS ESPERA DE MÍ

¿Cómo podría hacer yo algo tan malo y pecar contra Dios?

Dios nos invita a conocer la diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo, y escoger lo correcto. Parece que hoy en día nos sigue resultado difícil hacer una buena elección en este sentido. Pero Dios nos habla a todos los seres humanos.

Pablo describe lo malvado que era el primer siglo: Pues muestran por su conducta que llevan la ley escrita en el corazón. Su propia conciencia lo comprueba. (Romanos 2:15)

En los días de hoy una frase justificativa como “Todo el mundo lo hace” se ha instaurado como favorita en nuestra comunicación diaria, ya sea mintiendo al pagar los impuestos, o engañando a la pareja, o diciendo mentiras. La racionalidad trata de justificar lo incorrecto.

En la lectura del Antiguo Testamento para hoy, la esposa de Potifar esperaba que José decidiera que lo mejor era su invitación a pecar. Después de todo, ella era la autoridad y él solamente un criado. José le contestó con la siguiente pregunta: ¿Cómo podría hacer yo algo tan malo y pecar contra Dios? Esta decisión lo llevó a la cárcel.

El criterio que debemos usar no es lo que yo quiero, ni lo que es seguro, ni lo que la sociedad enseña, ni lo que la mayoría hace; el único criterio acertado es el que emana de la Palabra de Dios.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a vivir nuestra vida de acuerdo a tu voluntad y líbranos cuando las cuerdas de la corrupción y la injusticia pretendan atarnos. Amén.
