TEACHER AND LORD
JOHN 13:11-20
You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is
what I am.

Jewish
tradition is very much alive in this conversation between Jesus and his
disciples. In Palestine, the people used to bathe before going out and
attending a party. When they arrived at the home of their host, all they had to
do was to wash their feet. That was the ritual on entering the host’s house.
Jesus
uses this imagery and indicates to Peter that the act of washing his feet is
indispensable in order to enter, not only the house of a temporary host, but of
the one who is the Lord of our eternal home. We cannot be sure that Peter was
able to grasp the message, but his immediate reaction leads us to believe that
he correctly interpreted Jesus’ words. Obviously this passage complements the
previous one. The expression of humility and solidarity with one another takes
on added meaning when it crosses the border from human horizontality and
invades the verticality of God.
Jesus
is our Teacher and our only Lord, and he invites us, purified, to enter his
house–that place to which, in John’s own words, he went to prepare for each one
of us. We invite you in the name of the Lord and Teacher to shake off the dust
from your feet and enter to reside in the home of the one who always has a
space to receive and house those who seek him.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you are also a teacher and you show us the way
that leads to the house of the eternal God. Amen.

MAESTRO Y SEÑOR
JUAN 13:11-20

Maestro, y Señor; y decís bien, porque lo soy

La tradición judía está muy presente en este diálogo
entre Jesús y sus discípulos. En Palestina la gente acostumbraba a bañarse
antes de salir y asistir a una fiesta. Cuando llegaban a la casa de su
anfitrión, bastaba con que se lavaran los pies. Era esta la ceremonia al entrar
a la casa del invitado.
Jesús usa la imagen y le indica a Pedro que el acto de
lavarse los pies es indispensable para poder entrar, no ya en la casa de un
anfitrión improvisado, sino de aquel que es el Señor de la casa eterna. No
podemos asegurar que Pedro fue capaz de captar el mensaje, pero su inmediata
reacción nos lleva a pensar que valoró correctamente las palabras de Jesús.
Obviamente este pasaje complementa al anterior. La
expresión de humildad y de solidaridad de los unos con los otros toma sentido
cuando pasa la frontera de la horizontalidad humana e invade la verticalidad de
Dios.
Jesús es nuestro Maestro y nuestro único Señor, y nos
invita a entrar purificados en su casa, en aquel lugar que en el propio decir
de Juan, fue a preparar para cada uno de nosotros.
Te invitamos en nombre del Señor y Maestro a sacudir el
polvo de tus pies y entrar a morar en la casa de aquel que siempre tiene un
espacio para recibir y hospedar al que le busca.
Oración: Gracias Señor, porque además eres Maestro y nos muestras
el camino que conduce a la casa del Dios eterno. Amén.
